iPad Pro 10.5 Screen Replacement

Hey, hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

I need the screen of my iPad Pro 10.5 replaced - model a1709.

I’ve had prices from $200 - $400.

Thing is, I’ve heard some horror stories with the adhesive of the pro models sticking because the glass is flush with the screen as opposed to the lower priced models. Not sure what to do here as the iPad is getting old but still useable.

If you were in my shoes would you bother paying $300 or more for an older pro iPad or just sell it for parts and maybe getting $100?

I am in the Hornsby area in Sydney if anyone knows of a descent price. Otherwise, I’ll sort of take the input from this thread and go with what seems to be the general consensus. Cheers.

have you checked the price only for the display if you do it diy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWzQBqd1kS8

    • Yeah I did. Around $150ish I saw them for only doing a bit of investigation. But the Pro models are apparently a LOT harder to fix because if how the glass and the screen has zero gap between it. Plus my sausage fingers would drive me mental! May just be the time to upgrade to the pro 12.9. Gives me a good excuse. :)

Sure, but only up to $300 or so for the screen replacement (i.e. that would be the upper limit, not the lower limit, I say). Your model isn't terribly old (2017 right?) but it's definitely getting towards the end of its support, so you can expect to stop getting updates/etc (if not outright intentional crippling of the device, as Apple has been caught doing multiple times) probably by the end of next year or so, if not earlier. So you definitely don't want to put too much cash into repairing something that's days are already numbered.

But on the other hand, you've probably got things set up just the way you like on that iPad, so you should weigh that against the cost of just saying 'screw it' and buying a newer version.

Mate, you’re thinking exactly the way I was. I was thinking $300 would have to be the limit. It’s still really smooth which is a shame, but the screen comes on and off so it’s basically unusable. The support is also the final hurdle. I could’t find an active list of when certain models support expires but yeah I’m guessing end of 2023 if I am very lucky. May be time to flog it off for parts and be done with it.

Also never occurred to me to try casting it to my Apple TV…. Might be able to put it too some sort of use and adding a mouse/keyboard.

      Cheers.

  • Support isn’t based on years. It’s based on capability. Support ends for models not deemed capable of running new software sufficiently. The pro should be supported for some time yet as it’s much more capable than much later base models which will lose support first.

    • Yeah couldn’t agree more. It’s still performing amazingly. There is no need to limit the support time. But Apple is also going to do what’s best for their bottom line which is what worries me. I wish they would announce a timeline for this model but unfortunately can’t seem to find anything solid.

  • Have you checked if it’s still under warranty?

I got the same model a few years ago, it’s just a few months out of warranty (24 months if including Australian Consumer Law).

I’ve got a screen issue too and was thinking of asking Apple to fix it anyway.

    • Yeah unfortunately out of warranty by a good chunk. I’ve had the unit almost 5 years now. Struggling on what to do here. I tested it last night to see if it can cast to the Apple TV and it does perfectly so may just have to find a scenario to use it in. Jukebox for parties maybe? Lol.
