How to Install Pull out Wire Drawers in a 740 Mm Cabinet?

My cabinet's inner width is 740mm

I am trying to install this type of drawers

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51xTBNgKtjL.AC_SL1024.jpg

The closest I can see it 700mm wide drawers. Is there is way to install them using some spacer/battens etc?

TIA

  • I would use google to search for Wire Drawers kitchen Cabinet as there are wider ones available.

    Yes. Use spacer/battens.

Do you have any photos or site that shows the example?

Nope. Find some board/timber half the thickness you need (20mm) screw a bit to each side (or 2 bits to one side) where the runner needs to be. Screw the runner to that.

Not a difficult task, but then if you has to ask ….

Yes, just install a batten etc of the required thickness then secure the runners to that instead of the carcass.

I have minimal tools here and I was wondering if Bunnings or someone else can cut them up for me in the right size.

I would appreciate if someone can tell me a guide on how to nail/attach these battens to the sides.

Bunnings will do some cuts but depends on the person and what exactly you need. You'll need the drawer first to determine how it's fitted, eg is the basket 700mm wide plus runners? Is it designed to fit into a 700mm wide cabinet? The width is critical to ensure the runners don't bind. You also need to ensure the opening is square and the sides parallel for the same reason. If for example the cabinet is a few mm wider in front than it is in back (or vice versa) the batten will likely need to be tapered to take that into account.

If you're not sure how to even attach the batten to the carcass then doing all of that and fitting the runners may be above your skill level and you might be better off getting someone in. If you really want to take it on though there's a heap of videos on youtube that will show the process.

I can attach a batten but would like to know the best way to do it.

There is minimal tapering in the cabinet as I have remove the board from it and put in a Ikea wire based pullout drawer https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/hjaelpa-wire-basket-with-pull-o…

@bargainhuntingcouple: Just screw it on. You could even use the same screws that are mounting the basket and go all the way through the batten though you'd obviously need longer screws than what they'd come with. Just make sure you don't use a screw that's too long so that it breaks through the other side. If you want to keep it simple just attach the batten first, drill and countersink your holes in the batten then use that to mark and drill the cabinet.

Ikea one will be a bit tricky as they don't supply any measurements for the runners as it's made to fit their own stuff but it's doable. You'll need to measure the overall width of the basket and runner so you know what width you'll need the battens. Depending on the amount of play in the runner you might want to go with the exact measurement or a mm or two under to help with any taper in the carcass.

Bunnings will cut timber for you.

Get some wood screws and screw from the outside, make sure the timber is level.

        • Bunnings will only for timber you buy from them, and will only do a few cuts before they charge you

      • Screw dont nail. You're either going to have invest in some basic tools or pay for an install. A drill, driver, saw, combo square, tape, screwdrivers, clamps and a level for starters. Ozito from Bunnings is ok for limited use.

Going by OP's post history he's pretty good at screwing (other couples)

It may change the whole context of this post.

@Muzeeb: Suggestion for OP, date someone with the tools and skills :)

          • @Muzeeb: What is exactly wrong with having sex with multiple people? You never tried it? Never wanted it?

  • The Storage Shop online sell width adjustable wire drawers on runners with melamine spacers. Very easy for this non-handy person to install.

  • 600mm drawers are usually sold for cabinets with 600mn external width.

So they will be smaller than that. 740mm is a weird size as an external 800mm drawer is usually 764mm internal.

Measure your cabinet again to make sure you have the right measurements

    • I measured it multiple times. These people got it custom made in China it seems.

It’s not that unusual to have a custom cabinet in a kitchen, they aren’t hard to make. Often need a weird size to complete a section.

    • Uploaded the photos. It is a weird size for sure.

  • Hey mate, I put some drawers in 6 months ago and it’s easy if you have the right tools.

If you want to use timber packers then the tricky part is getting them the right thickness. Although you only need to get it within 2-4 mm as the drawer runners have a little play in them.
If you have access to a thicknesser or drum sander you are in luck but it doesn’t sound like it.

If you have timber packers that are not thick enough you can always pack them out a bit more with some window packers/window shim (ask a chippy if you can have a few 1 or 2mm. They are plastic so you can drill a hole in them. Probably easy to cut if you have a dremel , which let’s face it, it’s in every ozbargainers tool kit.
With the gab between the packer and cabinetry just fill it with some white no more gaps. It won’t look that nice at first but after a week you won’t even notice it.

    • Good suggestions!

I can always add some plywood to create 5mm increments. Yes, I don't have a planer or drum sander etc.
