Optus to Begin Charging Phone Customers for Premier League Access

Spotted this today in the news.

TL;DR

  • Optus is increasing the monthly subscription fee for non-customers to $24.99 from August 1,
  • while eligible customers will be charged for the first time at $6.99 per month.

What's your thoughts on this? If it would include UCL I would gladly pay but just for EPL seems bit much.
Are there any cheaper alternatives out there?

  • What's CPL?????

  • Another football streaming cock up from Optus.
Fans will vote with their feet

  • alternatives will be vpn to another country and watch the free to air games - I think game of the day or something in UK (not sure) . I m not with Optus on phones but got optus sports on the annual deal which is 100/year. so 8.3/month but you are paying for 2-3 months where the league is not played.

    Official announcement from Optus:

    https://sport.optus.com.au/articles/os43329/optus-sport-anno…

If you are not Optus customer, you will need to pay $24.99 per month from August.

Announcement showed up. 25 per month or 200 for a year. well this sucks

  • Wonder if there is a ‘family plan’

And they are only upgrading the streams to 1080p. Stan Sport - who I guess is the major streaming-only sports competitor - are showing selected French Open (tennis) games in 4K.

Is Kayo a joke to you?

      • +1

No. Kayo is owned by Foxtel, and the obvious reason they don't offer 4K is because they want to keep it a premium product for their satellite / cable customers. Optus and Stan (owned by Nine) aren't part of a company where 4K is available elsewhere for a premium.

  • I assume best to get a good guys/harvey $49 24month plan with $100 GC if really need it.
44.85c a month for Premier league and 60GB data

  • I can understand a price increase, but more than 100% is ridiculous

  • They now also have unskippable ads. Either charge or get revenue through ads but not both.

2 years ago we had prem + Europe ad free for free/half the price. It's definitely going the wrong direction, but it's a monopoly, so unless you want dodgy streams or foreign commentary there is no alternative than to just be an unhappy customer.

  • Would it also apply to all those users who got the Samsung tablet and the Sports pack was a free add on?

    • Sadly yeah, surely all existing customers will be labelled as “eligible” with $6.99 p/m.

      • I can register a new plan right now… and add-on optus sport "subscription included in your plan at no extra cost".

        • Yes you can now but it changes from August 1, see the Op’s link.

          • @Smokey010: Yeh i saw, just mean its a bit shady not updating the info when signing up for a new plan.

          • @Smokey010: Is it possible to opt out of it?

            • +1

@RSmith: Saw this on other post.

              Cancel Optus Sports :
Mobile My Optus App -> Service -> Add-ons -> Optus Sport -> Remove Optus Sport

  • No-one saw that coming did they! Gonna take a lot of subscriptions to recoup the $600 million they paid to renew the rights AND the additional profit they will want from it.

  • Tell him he's dreamin

  • from August, all live and on-demand Premier League matches will be available to stream in 1080p HD on supported devices. That means you can watch all the action from the world’s best league in exceptional detail.

This would have been a little more impressive 5 years ago… their streaming quality has been dog shit for way too long

  • I did not see this post and had no idea this was happening. I just got the email confirming it. I actually singed up to the tablet deal to get another 12months access since mine is ending in July.. I find this pretty disgusting that they did not alert customers earlier.. Or even on the sale page. I'm so upset about this!

  • Long time broadband customer, on an old plan that included Optus Sport and Fetch TV.
    Soon to be an ex-customer.

  • At this stage Optus Sport via Fetch Channel Pack will not be subject to the price increase and you will not need to unsubscribe.
    So still free for some.
