Home Security Camera System - PoE Cameras with NVR and Google Assistant Compatible?

Are there any security camera systems with a NVR and PoE cameras that also allow live streaming on a Google Nest Hub?

Budget is around $500-$700 (for 4 cameras) so was initially looking at Reolink but it looks like that the Google Assistant compatibility is lost once a camera is connected to a NVR.

Thanks

  • I have the Reolink but no NVR as you do lose Google Assistant compatibility like you mentioned. I just stuck SD cards in each individual camera I wanted some recording.

Keep in mind and this may be the same with some other brands but I found the video stream to my Nest Hub on the Reolink would cut in and out. It wasn't consistent. Updated firmware and still the same. It's the same for Reolink POE dome and stand alone PTZ camera. The video stream to the Reolink app stays connected and doesn't drop out so I'm leaning towards it being a Nest issue.

I have a Nest doorbell and the stream for that appears solid but the Nest cameras don't do NVR.

I've heard Swann may have an NVR that is Google Assistant compatible so you may be able to find one there.

In short, none of that helps but I ended up ditching the NVR and accepting I won't get constant streams. If I did I'd go Nest Cameras.

I would not look for both functions at the camera level as that is requiring two connections to your camera (one from NVR, one from GA). Instead, I would look to use an NVR that can be integrated with Google Assistant. That way the flow is Cameras -> NVR -> Google Assistant. This way you can set your cameras up on a restricted network and only allow Google to access your NVR rather than your cameras directly.

If you can't find an NVR that ticks that box, then another way you can achieve this is via something like Home Assistant. The flow would then be Cameras -> NVR -> Home Assistant -> Google Assistant. One of the benefits of this is that Chromecast devices allow local streaming, so you can stream direct from HA using the Nest as a "media player" with the camera as a source. I have mine set up this way, with the NVR being my Synology NAS.

  • I was looking for something similar couple years ago, but couldn't find anything that ticked every box. Wound up with Unifi, but don't have live streaming to Nest.

  • Some Dahua NVR's can be put into bridge mode (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rv7SskL0IbY) so that you can directly access any of the connected devices. Am guessing if the camera is Google Assistant compatible and it can be directly accessed on the network then Google Assistant devices should be able to pickup the stream.

  • Just use HA with google assistant + poe cameras for around the house.
Then get Ring or something similar for door bell.
As Ring is tech is way better than what's comes with any POE.
