Making Your Own iPad Accessories?

I just bought an IPAD on EBay. I want to get a few accessories…

I went to Kmart…$30 for a simple plastic cover…$14 for a plastic screen protector…

Has anyone made their own stuff for the IPAD from normal household stuff? Eg: cover from kids' 2 dollar notepad; screen protector from $4 'Contact' plastic sheets, etc

Has anyone rolled their own?

No need to make your own with chinese eBay sellers.

I made an iPad bag. Grab a old plastic shopping bag (doesn't matter what colour) place iPad inside and BAM iPad carry bag XD

In all seriousness eBay is the go like Phesto said.

You'd buy the ipad on ebay, but go to Kmart for accessories?

      Correct.

KMART is the cheapest, I have found, for everything.

Guy Russo, the MD of Kmart Australia, crushes prices to a bear minimum that even Big W cannot compete with.

I am never going to Harvey Norman again, it's a waste of time as they never have anything cheaper than KMART (although they have stuff KMART never stocks) - the same IPAD cover as Kmart had for $30, Harvey Norman had for $45..same brand, packaging, everything!

      KMART is Tha Bomb!

  • ebay is your friend, usually takes a week to arrive

So, I guess no-one has taken the time to make their own accessories by hand, to be unique and re-use existing things they already have (apart from shopping bags, LOL :-).

I guess I'll have to follow the EBAY herd, buy new Chinese crap and pollute the environment some more.

I'm talking about stuff like this:

    Anyone done that?

    • buy a big hardcover book (bigger WxHxD than the Ipad).

cut out the interior of the pages (like a secret compartment) large enough for the ipad to fit in.

glue the inside of the pages together, so that it can open/hinge at one point.

      cut/drill holes for headphones, etc.

check out www.instructables.com and search for "ipad cover", there are some novel ideas there.

    • I understand your concern with land fill etc but unfortunately there isn't much more options. The things you buy from Kmart will end up the same way as anything off eBay. Just a note too that home make case would most likely cost more than $30 to make. Wife works at a fabric store can't believe how much stuff costs :(

    • Given that you're even vaguely considering using stick on contact for a screen protector, people have offered the advice they have to save you money, as you originally requested, not simply to 'follow the herd.' PLEASE do not use contact. Apart from the hell you're going to have removing the adhesive from your screen (if you don't trash it in the process) your 6 failed attempts at getting it on smoothly are going to contribute to landfill just as readily as anything else.

You CAN make your own stylus pen if you feel the need (although there are plenty of cheapies in those available too) - there are plenty of demo's on how to do this on YouTube.

  • If you have time, by all means, contribute to the environment and make your iPad case out of an old textbook or moleskine.

Thing is, Even if you don't buy the accessory it will still end up in the landfill somewhere — there's already an over-abundance of Apple paraphenalia lying around.
