DoorDash Earnings - Curious to Know How Much They Make

Hello OzB. I use DoorDash quite frequently however every time I order, the Dashers drive a distance to deliver it to me. I'm just curious if they are still profitable with fuel prices and what they actually earn as a dasher for side income

Curious as a customer of DoorDash.

In Sydney, especially during peak time and if you’re able to use Menulog/Doordash at the same time, you can make $30-$60ph during lunch and dinner however it really boils down to knowing the area well and knowing which deliveries to take as opposed to others. You’d be making more than a retail job if you opt for DoorDash however food delivery is really unsustainable on its own unless you’re willing to put in a lot of hours, at which stage it becomes pretty unprofitable.

Know this from a couple of friends who’ve done it/do it as a side thing.

And that is before fuel, insurance, running costs and tax. No thanks.

      • I know a former Courier Driver that is doing quite well now doing Food deliveries etc. He was earning more at CP, but the hours were killing him, bookwork plus outgoings.
He is not getting as much as he was with CP, but is earning more than me per week (not hard). I would do it, but it's not allowed under my Novated Lease agreement. :(

I used to hang out with someone who did UberEats on her powered bike. The money can be good on a busy day but also can be 'sad' on quiet days. She could earn more than $100 after a couple of hours but, on quiet days, she would be lucky to collect $50.

It's a good way of making extra money but also not do-able long-term. You need to eat early/late as you want to be delivering on meal hours. Then there is the physical risk of getting into an accident, especially for those cycling. The above lady broke her leg from falling off her bike (failed brake) and had many close encounters with cars/buses (on Parramatta road).

E-bike is a good idea, i fail to see how people on bicycle or car make any money. Car is too difficult unless you have a co-driver to duck into the restaurants for pickup. Bike is too slow (and honestly i hate when they deliver my now-cold food on bicycle…)

It's indeed the best middle grounds for reasons you listed.

However bear in mind these bikes have a maximum legal limit of 200W (in NSW at least) which does not make them that fast or powerful (pretty weak for climbing up Surry Hills).
Then there is the required downtime to charge these bikes (which only last a few hours).

"Are door dash workers overpaid? Yes/No"

    • I'm inclined to say No considering how much physical danger they face on the roads (specifically for bike riders) and how they helped deliver food to the masses during lockdown.

Of course the answer also depends on how much you value your time vs doing pick-ups.

That was a rhetorical question my friend.

It was a joke because there have been a sudden rush of "are XYZ overpaid" in the forums

        • +3

Completely missed that. I stand humbled.

            @ddhar: Don’t sweat it
That was a sincere reply from you.

I only knew he was kidding coz I had seen the other posts where he got his inspiration from.

    • Cue the lawyer coming in to explain why they're paid too much and only lawyers deserve the pay they receive.

The other headache for drivers is trying to find a park, especially in inner city or shopping centres.
