Sim card use in Archer D7 Router??

Currently have been using my older Samsung phone permanently plugged into USB power, for wifi hotspot.
(Usually use disposable Kogan/other cheap data Sim)
I just pulled out of spare room, Archer D7 router I got given a while back and it has two USB ports on the back labelled USB1 and USB2.
Doesn't seem to have a simcard slot, but willing to buy a cheap USB modem (E3372?) if it will work with this router???
Can you please help

Have tried googling Archer D7 and Sim card, but doesn't easily give alot of information on using a Sim card with this router

The Archer D7 will not support mobile broadband dongles, according to the data sheet the ports are for printers and storage devices only.

Maybe you want the TP-Link Archer MR400 / MR600. It has a SIM card slot built in.

    • Thanks. A commenter on a posted deal said a USB wifi dongle would work in a router with a USB port.

Thanks for the direct info and simplifying it down for me

      • It will work if you flash the router with OpenWrt firmware (an open source router firmware based on linux) OpenWrt has a ton more functionality than stock router firmware and includes the ability to program the router to support the Huawei E3372 USB Stick.
        TP-Link Archer D7 / D7b v1 are supported by OpenWrt
There are other open source firmwares for routers e.g. Tomato, DD Wrt etc. but I haven't looked them up to see if they are compatible with the D7
You need to have intermediate knowledge of routers to set this up or be prepared to do some research there are many places to learn how to use OpenWrt e.g. OpenWrt website, youtube, networking forums etc.

Another option where someone else does all the setup to make USB Dongles work with your TP-Link Archer D7

ROOter custom firmware based on OpenWrt

You will need to ask them on the Whirlpool forum to add support for your TP-Link Archer D7 which they will do for free (link to forum below)

  • With TP-LINK equipment in the past they have only ever supported the documented 3G/4G USB modems and not other similar USB modems. So if the E3372 is on the list of supported modems then it will work.

    • The TP-Link Archer D7 doesn't support any USB Modems with the stock firmware installed.

  • $5 Solution 1; Solution 2

You can even setup Smart Home devices with it, which usually do not work with a Hotspot phone.

    • I think that might be the cheapest/easiest way to go.

      E5577 or E5573

Thanks. I'll keep an eye out for either of those

      • This /\ is what I do (using a different model). The one problem with it though, is you have to either leave the thing plugged in all the time (thus forever charging it which eventually kills the battery), or, you have to disconnect the cable at 100% charge, use it until the charge falls to whatever % you prefer, then remember to plug it back in again, and remove at 100% again, etc. That said, I did just go "Meh…" and left mine plugged in 24/7 for about 3 years, which was nearly a year after the battery bloated. I replaced the battery after it had expanded so much that it cracked the modem plastic (lol), and it's still working fine. I also found you can't just leave the battery out. You might be lucky, but my model just shows an error and won't turn on without the battery in.

If you go this way I'd recommend getting a magnetic cable (where a small piece stays in the port 24/7 and you just tilt/pull the cable free). Mine is connected this way. It's easier on the port instead of putting it in/out hundreds of times. I just break the connection and slip it in my pocket when I leave the house.

I also bought a second modem of the same model and set it up with all the same ID/password info. This way if one dies I can just switch them without researching anything, which would be impossible if I needed to go online first now the first one is dead.
