Reading this right now. About half way through book 2. Pretty good read.

    • Do you have an age rec?

My 11 year old is reading the authors Cradle series currently and loving it. Travelers Gate was the authors first books and although they aren't as well written they were still fun enough.

In terms of themes this series is full of fighting and action on par with an Iron Man or Avengers movie (not too gruesome), there is a few deaths of main characters. From a reading ability I'd say that kids around 10 to 12 should be fine with it. It probably requires a similar reading skill to the first couple of Harry Potter books.

  • Wtf is litrpg?

Litrpg is a book version of a role playing game I guess? The main character starts as a level 1 and then levels up over the course of the story, making choices as to which powers/spells to use. It sounds horrible I know, but they can actually be a good read. I can recommend The Mayor of Noobtown series or He who fights Monsters by Shirtaloon for some very aussie (but not in a bad way) flavour.

Litrpg (literature RPG) are novels that tend to borrow mechanics from games such as leveling, stat point/skill point distribution, or game UI interface. A popular example would be Sword Art Online or Solo Levelling/

In a relatively similar vein, progression fantasy are novels where the characters also slowly "progress" throughout the story but are more vague on how strong they are. A great example of some progression fantasy novels are Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson or Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan/Brandon Sanderson.

    • For reference - Will Wight is an exceptionally good writer. One of my favourites. I don't classify this as LitRPG. I'm yet to find a good LitRPG.

Strongly recommend Will's books. Cradle is brilliant. It's xianxia styled - definition here 😄 https://www.willwight.com/a-blog-of-dubious-intent/the-ances….

Recommend you read a chapter and decide for yourself. I'm a Hard SciFi Fantasy reader and this has been an incredibly good find. Real fun.

I can give you some suggestions for litrpg if you want.

Vainqueuer the dragon - comedic adventure theme where the MC had to tag along with the other MC due to this and that. Bonus points because it's fully released.

Threadbare - a different take on most litrpgs. Very little min max OP stuff so far.

Second coming of gluttony - good character development, interesting story, ending was a bit rushed. Skip the bonus stories after the epilogue. Also bonus point for being completed.

        • Thanks. Will have a look. Always looking for new stuff to get stuck into 😁.

Love Will Wight. I got into his Cradle series thanks to an OzBargain post and am eagerly awaiting the next book. This trilogy might help to tide me over, thanks!

Couldn't agree more. Love his stuff.

If people like this series then I recommend The Rangers Apprentice series by John Flannagan, an Aussie author. There's a few spin off series too that come later like Brotherband and the Royal Rnager, which helps to keep the world fresh with the new characters and adventures they go on.

I wouldn't really call Will Wight litrpg, at least Cradle wasn't.

Cradle is great though I haven't read his other works

  • Doesn't look free to me
