EOFY Gaming Laptop Suggestions 3k+

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for suggestions on what gaming laptop i should upgrade to from my old 17inch Metabox.
Looking to spend 3k+. Hopefully some type of EOFY sale.

I really am not the most knowledgeable in regards to laptop specs so any help/direction would be appreciated. If further information is needed on what I'm looking for, please post below and I'll update my post.

General idea of what i'm looking for -

Battery life is not the most important. A few hours of light usage unplugged would be great but it will be plugged in most of the time.
17inch screen is a major preference. I'd consider going to 16inch but nothing smaller.
Weight/size is not the biggest issue. I'd rather some type of fitting form factor but i also understand that i am buying a gaming laptop after all.
I use an external monitor every now and again for films and the very occasional gaming but i mostly use the laptop screen itself.
I would like some type of upgradability in the long run.
A few tb's of SSD storage would be great. i don't need more then that. No HDD.
2/3 years warranty at the very least would be great

Games i'm currently playing -

Overwatch
World of Warcraft
Mount and Blade Bannerlord 2

Current laptop - Metabox P65 67RSRP

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz
Number of Cores 4
Speed 3.5 GHz

Video Card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
Chipset NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
Total Memory 16 GB
Dedicated Memory 8.0 GB

You don't need an i9 in a gaming laptop. Use that money to upgrade GPU & RAM as much as you can instead.

What options has your research found so far?

I think you need to think through more what you actually want out of the gaming laptop and how you plan to use it. Is there any degree of portability needed, battery life, screen size/quality (or are you using an external monitor), upgradability, heaps of storage, warranty/support, etc…

As Hybroid mentioned, i9 probably isn't going to make a huge difference particularly if your focus is on gaming.

Hey mate, thanks for the comment.

      To answer your questions -
Minimal degree of portability needed. Its mostly portability around the house and every now and again somewhere outside the house. I have my laptop mostly setup downstairs in the dining area.
Battery life is not the most important. A few hours of light usage unplugged would be great but it will be plugged in most of the time.
17inch screen is a major preference. I'd consider going to 16inch but nothing smaller.

I hope that helps to clarify what i'm looking for mate. If you need any other info, let me know!
      Cheers

As the two others have said, I will +1 on the i9 being a waste of money in a laptop. The thermal cooling performance will turn that i9 into an i7 faster than you can say 'thermal throttling'

  • I'd defer to the advice of such youtube tech gods as Dave2D, Jarrod'sTech, etc. Just searched Dave2D and got this if you're interested in watching: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDQGqipmuFA

Personally, I own and am typing on an Asus Zephyrus G14 2020 with an GTX 1660 Ti and an AMD Ryzen 7 4800HS, 16GB RAM etc. And it is a beast in a really nice form factor.

Very interesting watch and after looking into the 2022 asus zephyrus m16 i might be leaning towards it.
