Suggestions for Decaf Coffee Maker/Instant Coffee?

Hi guys, my mum will be coming from overseas to stay with us for 2 months. She loves coffee, however due to her age she can only drink decaf. I would like to get her some decaf coffee however as my wife and I both don't drink coffee, I'm not too sure what to get her. I did some basic searching and found the following options:

  1. Instant decaf coffee - easiest to make, however doesn't taste as good?
  2. Aldi coffee machine + milk frother - cheap compared to other pod machines and reviews seem pretty good

I'm open to other suggestions, ideally I'd want something not too expensive (<$200) and doesn't take too long to make a cup of coffee. Also is a milk frother even needed for decaf?

You should really ask her what she likes and used to. Some people like instant or 3-in-1 and don't care for anything else. Some people actually don't like coffee so they get Starbucks. Some people like Nespresso and a particular flavour/colour pod and won't drink anything else.

If the latter, The Essenza Mini is pretty cheap at $129. It's quite compact and works well too. They do have decaf pods.

    • She mostly likes 3-in-1/instant and pods so either is fine.

The brands back in her home country are different from here plus the coffee isn't as good, so she wouldn't know what's good here.

I'll check out the Essenza, thanks!

Or - stay with me here - some people just like coffee that's different to the coffee you like. It's (a) still coffee and (b) none of your damned business how they take it. It's water pushed through beans by teenagers, not the second coming of Christ.

Why does every commodity have to attract insufferable bores who use them as a substitute for a personality?

"Oh, a Speyside. I guess you don't like real whiskey." /pretends to really enjoy something that tastes like licking an ashtray full of bandaids because they think it'll impress other easily-impressed idiots

Just grab the Aldi machine and pods, OP. Don't worry about a milk frother. Milk in cup, into microwave for a minute on high, throw in a pod or two, back in the microwave for 30 secs if she likes it really hot. The action of the pod shot falling into the hot milk puts a nice creamy froth on top.

There is a reason Starbucks withdrew from most of the Australian market.

Aldi decaf granules were being recommended by other people here, previously. Not a coffee connoisseur, but it tastes ok

    ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Aldi pod decaf is fine, and contrary to belief, decaffeinating coffee doesn’t change flavour much. Just the hit it gives you. I drink both regular in morning and decaf in afternoon/evening.

Only issue is that choice of coffee types is limited compared to regular pods. One decaf flavour vs scores of regular pods.

As for frothing, if she accepts instant coffee then she won’t miss the frothing. Flat white with a pod machine is acceptable. So the frother is optional. Btw the frother can be used with instant as well. So suggest getting the pod machine, as the coffee is nicer than instant in every way.

You can skip the frother, as you can buy later (or buy now, and return if you don’t use it)
