Subaru XV vs Ford Ambiente Fuel Consumption

Based on what I've googled, Subaru's (XV) fuel consumption though it's 2.0, is 7.7/100k, while Ford Ambiente 1.5L is around 6.7L. I drive that ford everyday from GC to BNE, but it never registers 6.7 on the dashboard, it's always a minimum of 8.1, so is it ok to assume that XV average is around 9L/100k?

Just trying to gauge savings for when I upgrade to Subaru.

  • Yes, unless you drive like grandma, fuel consumption is 1 - 2 litres higher than reported

My 12 yr old hybrid get's 0.2 above the combined rate and I gas it mostly and drive around 50 plus k's per day. Depends on the car and how much the manufacturer wishes to lie I guess. Just saying each car is different not even counting the other variables, tyres, wheels accessories ect.

    • I normally reached 120 after the cameras, so it's basically just a marketing ploy , that fuel stats on carsales au.

In contrast, the ‘extra urban’ component has a relatively high average speed (63 km/h) and a peak speed of 120 km/h. It is not a typical ‘highway’ cycle as it does not maintain a relatively constant speed over an extended period of time, but it is more likely to approximate fuel consumption in freeway or highway driving.

Which Ambiente do you have? Ecosport with the 3cyl 1.5L or Escape with the 1.5T?

    2019 Ecosport:

    • Fuel consumption combined - 6.9
    • Urban - 5.6
    • Extra Urban - 9.2

Tells me it's must absolutely drink around town

Looking at the XV, it's much the same:

    2022 XV:

    • Fuel consumption combined - 7
    • Urban - 6
    • Extra Urban - 8.8

It won't save you in fuel, if that's your plan

    • awd vs fwd would exepct higher for the awd but those figures don't look that bad all in all. Certainly not the choice to save fuel though.

Also the boxer design is not the most fuel efficient and likewise I'm also surprised how close the figures are.

    • Ambiente 4 cyl, 1.5L, model 2015

      • What's the actual model of vehicle… Ambiente is a badge

  • i have a 2017 xv with all terrain tires.
    I once drove to melby.

    Syd->Melby was about …. 8 to 9
Melby to Syd was about … 7 to 8, at times 6 something.

so i'm gonna guess GC to BNE you'll get … 7.5 to 8 depending on wind speed.

Maybe only drive on days when the wind is behind you ?

  • Have a look at Fuelly where people upload their fuel and distance to give real life figures.

  • Manufacturer quoted fuel consumption figures come from the tooth fairy.

    • Darn marketing strategy to dupe consumers to buy their tin cans!

  • If you really want to work out consumption, calculate it. Don’t rely on the trip computer.

Record how much you put in the tank and how far you have travelled. There are apps available. I use road trip lite.

  • I am constantly surprised by my wife's XV - it is definitely thirstier than I would have guessed.

    Farewell, brave traveller.

  • I have an impreza, which is the XV without the raised wheels. Its not the current model by any means but i think the engine is much the same

Around town it is indeed about 9 or 9.2, although I am guilty of a bit of a lead foot. On the highway Canberra to Sydney it dips below 6 (5.8 or even 5.6). The XV will likely be a touch higher

Like all ICE cars, if you do trips under 10 minutes it will be even higher - 10 or 11l/100.
