  • What would be a good way to power NBN equipment (NTU box / router) for the longest period of time during power outage or if someone deliberately turns off your mains outside?

    • +3

I'd say the 600VA/360W would be fine. Going up will just increase the time you can be without mains power for.

      • I initially wanted to stay online for over 5 hours. But like someone pointed out below, the NBN backhaul would probably not last that long so that's a bust.

    • "if someone deliberately turns off your mains outside" a lock on your meterbox

      • If I have a smart meter, I never need to unlock meterbox for reading as there will be no home visits. Is that correct?

        • WA has Western Australian Services (WAS) locks that can be accessed by the power provider with a master key that they carry. I'd say that even if you have a smart meter it is likely your provider needs access at all times. Not too sure what the situation is in Queensland sorry, but hope this helps.

  • would this be good for a 3d printer?

Would depend a lot on what you have, but figure somewhere between 10 to 24 watts for the NBN side of things (less for fibre, more for HFC), plus maybe another 20 watts for the wifi router. A simple UPS would keep that running for maybe an hour or two, although of course you might plug other things into it that then would reduce the run time. I personally work on the theory that you want to protect your kit from brown outs and surges, and for short outages eg up to 15 mins. Longer than that, then you might as well just tether off your mobile as it's quite likely that the nbn backhaul kit you have no control over might also have issues - but the mobile network tends to be a little more resilient. FWIW I have a 4g modem that I use when travelling and also as a fallback in the event of a major outage.

    • What 4g modem and travel router do you use? I'm travelling soon myself.

Good to know. My intention is to stay connected for longest period of time rather than protect the devices themselves. You raise a valid point that the NBN backhaul in the area will likely go down anyway.

  • Never used a cyberpower before, anyone got any positive or negative experiences they can share? I've worked with Eaton/HP and APC a lot for work but on a slightly different scale to the home style device here.

Last time we had a power outage our FTTC DPU in the pit got fried when the power came back on. Not sure if keeping it powered up would reduce the risk of this getting cooked again should the same thing happen but it would be better than having to wait days for NBN to replace it. Plus I could keep my HTPC and network stuff running while the power was out.
