Samsung Odyssey G52A 27" 165Hz QHD 1ms HDR400 FreeSync IPS Gaming Monitor $399 Shipped @ Samsung Australia

No monitor guru, but according to rtings this monitor seems to be just as good as the OzBargain favourite child - note that the variant rtings reviewed did not have HDR400 certification but the model right here does.

According to google its on sale for the same price in most aussie retailers, but only Samsung store, centrecom and computer alliance offer free shipping along with it. I have checked eBay and unfortunately Jack was a step ahead.

Very close to pulling the trigger here. Yeah or nah?

  • Great Price. Id say try the Samsung since the difference between the monitors are negligible and everyone has the Dell.

Here's how to debunk your entire premise: motion capture photography shows that it's not as well tuned, because RTings use an old measurement method that isn't particularly reflective of required ranges and tolerances for human vision. Until they update that part of their testing procedure, take no regard for how they assess and report response time measurements. The only reliable data in that sense is from said photographs.

Hell, you're still seeing better results from Dell's other good value offering, the S2722DGM. despite it being VA-based and around $100 cheaper.

Here's how to debunk your entire premise:

….wow calm down mate i said at the beginning im not guru and im just recounting what rtings said :) So I take it that the image quality is in actuality worse on the samsung monitor but rtings testing method is too outdated for current gen monitors and shouldnt be taken at face value? As for the va comparison you linked, I can only see the VA panel having larger values in all response times categories, isn't that worse because you would want smaller values/faster response times?

I'm just explaining? It's all good.

Check out TFTCentral and Hardware Unboxed for a wide array of monitors reviewed with updated testing procedures, but continue to observe pursuit photography to get a decent idea of performance.

You'll see what I mean in the table to table comparison, but also you can clearly see a more defined image from the VA, albeit with some minor dark smearing that is typical of most VA tunings.

        • okay so basically samsung panels are trash, is that right-on a general basis and excluding outliers? All these panel designations are confusing me in ways normal PC hardware couldnt and damn is it confusing.

On that note would you say any of these 1 2 are any good for a budget monitor for temporary use or I should just wait out for a Dell monitor sale.

          • @Brrrrt: Samsung panels are Samsung panels, any recent Samsung iteration below G7 (above is G8 & G9) are mediocre. The LCD manufacturing lines were sold off to CSOT anyway.

As I understand it, those are both inferior to the Dells.

            • @jasswolf: Gotcha. so basically with samsung monitors its go big or go home, that their lower end options are worse than competitors.

As for the two I linked, would the 289 one be worth its 'cheap' price?

One big plus for the Dell would be the Samsung has no support for wide colour gamut which matters more to me than HDR (especially HDrnt400)

  • The colours for HDR are pretty disappointing on the Samsung. Gamut coverage suggests that it’s just not as large as the 2721. Rting scores have always been stupid for the colour accuracy section though since they only look at 100cd/m^2 which is their way of “standardising” colour tests and their staff go all unga bunga on calibration RGB settings.
At a higher luminance, it’s likely that the lack of dci-p3 coverage while watching movies will be more noticeable.
Personally though, I find that Samsung just tends to be overpriced. I can understand it if you're purchasing anything beyond 32" but the rest of their lineup just consistently tends to fall short of their competitors (The 1440P gaming monitor market is extremely saturated)

Do not order anything from Samsung online store. The products are not getting delivered. I have raised a CAV for refund on G5 monitor order placed in feb.

  • This seems to have gone down to $299 now?
