Win7 duck shooting game

My request for rather niche software may seem antiquated given the cool gaming possibilities that exist, but I'll try anyway…

An elderly family member blew up his old PC so has a new Win7 PC. Unfortunately, his favourite game of all time "Bird Hunter: Waterfowl Edition" (http://www.allgame.com/game.php?id=23656&tab=overview) is an old Win95 game that does not work with Win7. Googling shows it should work by modifying the compatibility properties, and we can get it to work for a while, but then it freezes and he's not PC-skilled enough to use the Task Manager to get out of the software. Not to mention, it obviously sucks when the game freezes, so we need an alternative.

Do you know of software which has the following requirements:

  • realistic duck shooting (not cartoonish, like "Duck Hunt")
  • no online elements (he does not have the internet)
  • stable on Win7
  • very simple to use - the old game was just
    (1) choose site to shoot from,
    (2) put out decoys,
    (3) wait for ducks to arrive,
    (4) click to shoot them

I thought I'd found an alternative at Jenkat Games (http://www.jenkatgames.com/download/Ultimate-Duck-Hunting) but when I installed it on my computer to see if it was worth purchasing, the free trial version set off all manner of 'suspicious file' alerts so I've not proceeded further with it.

Your suggestions welcomed!

You can run a virtual machine with microsoft software (or just through virtual box). At the very least you'll be able to start up xp, if not 98, and run the game

Dosbox might also work. Much simpler and free.

  • 'xp mode' is an XP vm licence which is free if you have windows 7 pro. I recommend using vmware player rather than the ms vm as it works much better.

    • Alas, no Win7 Pro, only Home edition.

As a bird, I must voice my disapproval of your requested game. It is unethical, cruel and violent to be shooting ducks, who pose no threat to you or other people. It might be responsible for causing more frequent attacks on birds in society. If you really must have a game shooting things in the sky, make it leaves or aliens or UFOs instead, not cute fluffy ducks.

Trust me - I'm not a fan of duck shooting myself, and it pains me to be going to this effort for him to blast quackers into oblivion, even if it is just pixels.

I'd prefer it if he was blasting zombies. At least that's a useful skill to be learning for when the apocalypse arrives… ;-)

Then show him the way… intro him to a different game, maybe space invaders or as you suggested a zombie shooting game :)

You think that is the only problem with your post? I think you need some more schooling. Communication skills are useful.

        • Im sorry engrish is not my mother langue, she speak vietnamese. School is just a brainwash tool for government to keep their citizen stay "calm". Oh go tell ur PM about how to communicates with her cabinet, namely Rudd n Thomson.
