Learning to Play Badminton Frugally

Is learning to play Badminton frugally possible? I enjoy the game from the few hours I've ever played in my life, but the fact that I can't practice at home or even anywhere outdoors really hampers the ability to build basic skills or experience in it. Any tips?

become friendly with your neighbour - get 2 raquets and a cock and hit it over the fence to each other

what if your neighbour already has a cock?

      • Find another one without. Its more fun trust me

      • Let me go and ask him to show me his as mine is getting a little old and tattered.

Just go for the bigger one if you are a beginner.

          Less likely to miss.

    • I actually tried playing it at the park with no net but even light wind is just too much.

For beginners, the main thing to focus on is getting the footwork to be smooth, consistent and instinctive. How you hit the shuttle is fairly redundant if you cant get to the shuttle fast enough to prepare for whatever shot you want to play. All you need to practice footwork is a patch of open space that's as a big as one side of badminton court, or even at home to practice moving to front court.

    • thanks for the legit advice, this is the same importance for all racquet sports and led me to watching a few youtube vids on badminton specific footwork drills.

      • yup. pay attention on how the players have that little "jump" before they move, badminton movements need that small push to get you fast behind the shuttle

I have a set…. but never used it lol

    wanna be friends and practice?

or get switch and switch sports, it had badminton

    • Sure let's get together and see who handles a cock better.

Jokes aside I've tried it outside and the wind is just too much.

  • i used to play with a local club, casually it was $10/ 4 hour session in 2 v 2 rotations - they had everyone from absolute beginners all the way up to pros. Included mid-grade shuttlecocks but unfortunately after covid the club closed :(

    • it's $20 an hr at Sky Badminton in Logan Central for court hire, I've met a few guys there who play social 2 v 2 rotations, I just feel very noob and would like to improve, hence the thread.

Whilst $20 an hr is actually affordable in my sober and responsible adulthood. I'm comparing this all to when I played squash socially I went to the local park and hit a ball against a wall for months. Can't do that with badminton.

We used to use the front gate or a fence as a net. 2 rackets and a plastic shuttle (feather ones are better but costs more because they get wrecked). Pick up basic skills then start renting courts to play once you are comfortable. I know you mention you thought the wind was too much, but playing badminton outdoors is very common overseas.

Check the Meetup app. I joined a badminton group on it and we play once a week. Great way to meet new people and learn how to play.

A lot of ways to practice at home/alone, especially the basics.

Footwork - can be done anywhere on any flat surface
Form - Hang a shuttle some where high up and practice your form/swings to hit at maximum height
Hitting against a wall - Same way with how you practice squash. Just hit the shuttle against the wall continuously. Difference is you need to stand a lot closer to the wall.
Juggling the shuttle with your racket - Keep changing between backhand and forehand grips as you juggle
