I am planning to travel overseas end of this year and I want to see if I can get free flight tickets (excl. taxes).

  • Just churned CBA low fee gold card ($300 cashback on $1500 spend). Approved for NAB Qantas Rewards Signature card this afternoon ($90000 points in first year). Will be done with the NAB card in a month, the next one I will be getting is Westpac Altitude Qantas Platinum card (75000 points). Unfortunately, not eligible for Amex card for another year.

The ANZ FF black with 160k QFF points is your best bet here. That being said, you should check availability if you're flying business. You might have trouble finding flights especially since you're probably ~3 months away from the points hitting your account.

If you're flying economy you might be better off with a cashback credit card and buying a sale fare instead.

  • I grabbed this St George Amplify card. Comes with a decent amount of rewards points ~$450 worth and you basically get free Kayo for the first 12 months.

    • Did they waive off the annual fee?

      • 29 dollars for the first year. 99 thereafter

Where do you want to fly? I tend to collect points based on the routes I want to travel - i.e. I used to fly Qantas a lot for work so I'd use the points for upgrades, but now I fly to Canada from time to time so VFF is great since it includes Air Canada now, can do direct from Syd-Van whereas Qantas is via LAX/SF.

    Need more details:
    - Where are you planning to go?
    - How many people?
    - How many $Ks can you spend within a 60/90 day period?

Assuming flying economy and being approved for any cards out there.
Also be aware that there is airport tax/surcharge that is still payable in cash even on redemptions.

      • want to fly DXB
      • 2 people
      • 60 days $6000
Flying economy and should get approval for any card.

You want QFF for their partnership with Emirates (which flies direct to DXB).
Have a look at Point Hacks' credit card section that may help you find a suitable card.

You may not have enough time though to amass points for two x return trips. Even two x one-way trips may be stretching it with 100K QFF.
Also, there does not seem to be any available Rewards seat in Nov & Dec. Anyone else having the same results?

    • Emirates have increased taxes massively!

Nov and Dec is peak time so likely all gone

Unfortunately yeah, on both counts. 😔

OP, I suggest to look at:
        - Availabilities (& costs in terms of points and dollars)
        versus
        - Buying outright (could use third party but make damn sure your schedules are fixed).

If you do find spots, even in October, snap it up quickly.

  • How do you keep churning without being constantly rejected or being blacklisted? What are some subtle unwritten rules to follow, key points?

I churn every 3-6 months and I apply only for cards I meet eligibility criterias for.

It's worked out well so far.

From mid 2016 to mid 2018, I churned 16 credit cards and got a home loan for $430,000 late 2018. The bank asked why all the cards and I told them I was collecting QFF, they said fair enough.

The only thing I had to do was show all of the confirmation letters that the cards were closed.

    • What is your end goal? Is there a particular destination or airline you want? Premium cabin or economy is fine? Or do you just want to reduce expenditure (which the linked card will do)?

      • To be honest, I'm just after the cash back.
