Great deal, would go well with a new desk.

    • +2

      what desk can you recommend?

      • +5

hmm i've heard OmniDesks are great! Especially when they deliver all required boxes.

        • Can confirm both are good.

Currently also $339 on the Qantas rewards store. Or 48,570 points.

Do you know who JB uses for delivery?

      Auspost or Toll, you pest.

  • A few observations:

    • Mini XLR power connection, that's a big plus for these.
    • Micro USB input, not great, but I assume these are an older model and so predate USB-C being the default USB connector.
    • APTX is great, but make sure your phone can actually output in APTX, or you're gonna be stuck with a less high quality bluetooth codec, which isn't going to be great.
    • I don't think you would honestly be able to tell the difference with aptx at all, it's not aptx hd, so pretty much no discernible difference unless you are sitting in a sound proof room critiquing it - which again you wouldn't do as these have a very particular sound profile and they are tiny speakers with a large gap in the low end.

      iPhones don't do aptx.

  • Would these work well with a smart TV, (sony with arc, av and optical)?

If you have an arc check out these:

That being said I have the A5+, S8 Sub and a D1 DAC setup through optical which I use for the tv and everything else. headphones, laptop, music, wireless streaming, turntable.

      Crystal clear

I have similar gear but not considered it for tv. Assume you have to turn speakers on separately to tv and also volume is seperate to the tv remote?

        • +1

I usually just keep the speakers on and put them in sleep mode if I'm not using them. But usually music or something is running through them.

off at night or when I'm away.

I still haven't done a deep dive into getting the volume to work with one remote. It is possible and documented online, I just haven't done it.

So I still have the little audioengine remote for volume.

It's a cool setup because I can have everything connected to the one system. So it's clean and simple for what I need.

Without getting the wireless dongle I can just stream wirelessly through the TV or Laptop too.

For the price point it's better than any soundbar/ sub setup I've had or heard.
I like that I can hear the voices in an action scene crystal clear and I don't have to keep turning the volume up and down because it gets too loud or too quiet.

Then music is just something else entirely compared to a soundbar/ sub combo.

    • I use these on my LG. the TV has an analogue output which go straight into the back of the speakers (either 3.5mm or stereo RCA). I've also got a sub connected to the speakers (cant remember the model, but its not Audioengine).

I leave the speakers and sub on, controlling the volume through the TV remote. The audio gear shuts off power when it doesn't detect an incoming signal so there's no need to power it off/on when you want to use it.

      • The audioengines power off when no signal? I didn’t realise that was a thing, I’m still running the older A2 models.

        • auto-standby idle mode.

power-saving circuit that turns off the speaker's final stage amp.

The speakers don't power off without physically turning them off or cutting the power to them.

  • do people use these with bluetooth dongles on desktop? or is it mainly laptop setups ?

    • You can use line inputs or USB

    • I use my A3’S with a USB selector and TB4 dock so that they work with whichever MacBook or work laptop or my desktop rig is in use.

  • My one currently has a low always on static noise when switch on. Not sure if it is the speaker or amp.
I've changed the cables so it can't be the cables.

    • Mine too. I find it quite annoying as it’s quite noticeable if I’m not playing any audio on them.

    • Most active speakers have some form of base level of noise albeit more controlled in the higher end ones to be inaudible unless your ear is directly next to it.

      • How do you get rid of it?

        • You can't. Intrinsic nature of active speakers
