New Flip Key Fob Doesn't Start Car

Hi, so I bought a flip key fob from AliExpress a few year ago for my Corolla 2005. They cut the key and fitted it on the new key fob, all I had to do was transfer the battery transponder bit from my original key to the new case

Now I saw a newer model and ordered it, this time it didn't work. I am stumped as to why it didn't work. I assume the cutting is accurate as I can unlock and lock my car door. I also replaced with a brand new battery.

The only thing that I can think of, is the position of the battery bit is further away by 1cm from the metal key and is not in contact with the metal key.

With the original key, the battery bit was positioned right next to the metal key.

Any ideas? Thanks

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I personally would never trust AliExpress chinese Key cutting (have received wrong cut keys, which make whole key garbage), always get my keys cut from local locksmith for about $10-$25 (usually about the cost of key paid at AliExpress) more. But guaranteed that key will unlock the lock.

There often can be small differences in key ignition barrels and door handle etc. But if the ignition barrel turns normally. I'd probably think transponder chip is not close enough to the receiver. You dont need battery (in key fob) generally for car to start, battery only needed for unlocking/locking doors by remote buttons, otherwise its likely some other issue unrelated to the key. the coin battery has absolutely nothing to do with simple car like corolla 2005 not starting. (its not a smart fob key)

  • Cab you turn the hey in the ignition or not? Normally if the transponder dies the car will crank but not start, ie you can turn the key in the ignition but not drive off.

This is what you get when you buy $8 remote fobs and keys off Aliexpress.

As a part time locksmith, I don’t even touch these keys or remotes people get from eBay and Aliexpress for this exact reason. Because, if it doesn’t work (and most likely it won’t), it then becomes my fault and I’m a shit locksmith, not the fact that they bought a shit quality $8 key/fob from China.

Anyway, what it sounds like is that you may have not moved the transponder chip over (not the remote with battery part). The transponder is a small black chunk of plastic that the car reads to tell it that that key can be given access to start the car. It should look something like this

The battery part of the remote with the buttons on it is only for the central locking. If you can put the old key in and it works but the new key still won’t, it’s the transponder chip that needs to be moved over as well.

      Excellent advice.

  • Can the key turn in the ignition barrel if so the key should be fine? It will have to do with transponder being further away

  • It's Chinese quality lol
