Reliable Online PC Game Retailers?

Hi forum,

I want to buy an old game - Medieval: Total War (2002).

Start tl;dr bit:

Well actually, I already own it, but I wasn't able to run it. I couldn't even install it, but managed to install it on a Windows 7 computer I have, take those files and registry entries over to my Windows 10 PC, which did "install" it (in a very janky way), but the game executable does not launch now that it's installed. Likely due to a lack of Windows drivers to perform the copyright protection old games require before they allow themselves to launch. It's a problem I'm familiar with and tried a few workarounds to, but still had no luck, so I've reluctantly given up on that for now. I don't mind the idea of this game appearing in my Steam library going forward.

The game is available on Steam for $15. I would rather not pay that. As I said, I OWN this game. No way that I know of to make use of my old CD keys to receive a digital copy, so I guess I'll have to pay it.

End tl;dr bit.

I'm wondering if there's any/many online games retailers (like Green Man Gaming, for example) where I might look for this game and others. I've seen G2A come up, but have read some sellers on it are dodgy. CDKeys.com is another, and while MTW is for sale there for cheaper than Steam, it says it cannot be activated in Australia. Has anyone bought a game off CDKeys.com or somewhere similar and then redeemed it in a different country using a VPN? Not sure it's worth the hassle/risk to save a few dollars in this case, and/or get my Steam account banned.

Hopefully that makes sense. Any suggestions on retailers, or ways I might get to play one of my nostalgic favourites, would be appreciated.

Cheers

The game (Gold/Complete Edition) goes on sale often on Steam; I would wait around for a discount, as it goes down to the $2-$5 when on sale. The next sale on Steam should be in 10 days or so, that's the Steam Summer Sale 2022. Last Steam Summer Sale, the game (Medieval: Total War - Collection) was $3.74. If you can wait a week and a bit, this is your best bet.

Some keyshops are selling it for around the $5 mark right now, like Gamivo and Kinguin. I personally haven't had many bad experiences with key sellers/marketplaces, definitely YMMV though. The one time I had a bad experience with a key seller was with Eneba, but I was refunded after a week or two after receiving a dud key.

Have a look through here if you wish:

That's excellent Crispy. Thanks so much. I'm a long time out of the game, so had no idea the sites you listed existed. Seems like Steam had a sale last month. Damn.

i've never had a problem with gamivo, kinguin, g2a or any other grey market sellers.

the one i did have a problem with was HRK, they wanted me to send them a picture of my ID to buy a bloody game, so i got them to refund me and bought it for the same price from another seller, but that seems to be isolated to them, apparently i'm not the only one they pulled that shit with. funny how they put your order on hold after you pay for the game and don't warn you beforehand that you need to send them a pic of your ID.

always pay with paypal, in case there is a problem, but as i said, i've purchased many games from those considered "untrustworthy", always used paypal in case i needed to chargeback, but i've never needed to. even HRK refunded me after i had a go at them about the ID thing, it was just annoying that it took a few days for the funds to come back into my account.

Thanks mate. I'll have a look at that and the others!

Have you ever had/heard of Steam reacting badly to keys bought from certain sources?

I personally haven't had any issues with it, I've bought probably 7-10 keys off various sites, activated them on Steam and no issues at all from Steam themselves. They do offer users the ability to redeem product keys in the Steam client itself anyway.

i've never had it happen to me, but i've heard about it happening with those who buy ingame currency for certain games.

you can pay real money to get a currency in warframe, for example ( i think currency is called platinum ) and i used to play warframe a lot, but i never bought platinum from anywhere except the official store, as warframe devs crack down hard on that sort of thing.

i did get tempted a few times, but i didn't want to risk my account.

it's generally not steam that will react badly, but if a certain dev polices third party sales militantly, that's where you'll have problems, but i have only seen / heard about it happening with regards to sales of ingame currencies.

Not sure about this game specifically but I've used CDKeys.com successfully a few times

I haven't yet found a dodgy website for cd keys - they've all worked.

    Gamivo
    Kinguin
    cdkeys.coom
    Eneba

Steam always accepts the keys and haven't had any trouble. Just make sure you are buying your region specific key.

Ah yeah, so for example on CDKeys, MTW is there, but it says "Cannot activate in Australia". I should therefore avoid it and not try and use a VPN workaround to activate it?

Correct. Steam cracked down on it a few years ago and it's not worth the hassle.

I'm pretty sure you can still use a VPN to purchase DLC for games though - I got away with a heap of loot boxes at 10% of the price a few years ago.
