Soundbar - Wireless Subwoofer Keeps Disconnecting Randomly

I often get a 'tinny' effect that randomly cuts in and out for a few seconds – enough to be annoying.

I found out it seems to be the wireless subwoofer disconnecting - no option for wired I'm afraid.

It's a Sony HT-G700 on firmware 1.101.
The TV is an older Sony Bravia kdl-70w850b

Anyone know how to stop this from occurring?

I'm thinking is wireless interference.

My router is an Asus with 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz wifi frequency. The soundbar is confirmed to be 2.4Ghz.
I am unsure what channel the soundbar uses, I tried wifi analyzer and inSSIDer but can't seem to see the frequency the soundbar uses.

I will 'untangle' the sub/bars power cords so they are not touching.
The wifi router was sitting on top of the sub, I've now moved it, but still less than a meter close.

I'm totally new to audio 'theatre' setup. I've always only ever used TV speakers. So I'm keen for any advice.

PS
I googled 'wifi interference - soundbar' and a lot comes up. But not many fixes. I'm hoping there is a wiz here who has some ideas.

How far away is the sub, move it closer ?

Try playing music via Bluetooth from your phone if it keeps doing that the soundbar is faulty

    • Thank you kindly for your reply. Yes, it has done it via blue-tooth music too.
The bar had a faulty mainboard when it arrive - Sony has repaired it and replace.
I didn't have it long enough before the mainboard broke to test it properly.

I'm reading a lot about wifi interference. So wouldn't mind working on it to see if its 'user error' on my part and I need to adjust something.

Does anyone know how to figure out what wifi channel the sub/bar connection uses? I can't find it in the manual, just frequency.

  • Put the sub right beside the sound bar to avoid any interference if it keeps doing it there's not much you can do unless it's under warranty

    • Thank you - it is right next to it. Also close by is the TV (obviously :-D) a wifi router, a small LAN switch and power boards.
I will give the warranty a try as a last resort - thank you. Sony has been terrible from buying to support so far for this sound bar. I couldn't even use it until 3 months after I paid for it.

If I didn't get it for about half-price - I'd have done more research and got one with a wired subwoofer.

      • Ok so you've pretty much eliminated the only thing you can really troubleshoot, I've sold them at JB when they first came to market and I'd push for a full refund as there's nothing else you can really to do fix them, everyone lately has been saying that about Sony especially their TVs.

It's a long shot but if you could somehow factory reset it and repair the sub it could fix it but I think it's the board in the soundbar

Or turn off all devices on 2.4ghz and then see if it drops off

        • Wow. That's a shame.

If I turn off my 2.4 signal it will mean quite a few of my devices will not connect. I'll try to adjust the channel first and the signal strength etc. I take your point that I may need to switch it off to test.

Sony used to be a source of excellence- what happened?

  • Some Sony sound bars can take the sub over a wired connection, double check yours.

My Sony has a wireless sub but can also be cabled with jacks that are hidden under a sticker on the back

    • Na, I'm afraid the HT-G700 is wifi only.

I made some of the adjustmentx I mentioned. Last night - no drop outs after watching TV and listening to music for a few hours.

      • factory reset the unit
      • move wifi router off the sub (but its still very close)
      • changed 2.4ghz wifi frequency channel (randomly) to another number
      • made sure the sub/bar's power cables are not touching other cables
      • move another unnecessary electronic device away from it.

I think I've solved it. Here is what I did:

-moved the router off the top of the sub. Still very close by
-changed the 2.4ghz Wi-Fi channel to a higher random number
-made sure the sub and sound bars power cords are not tangled with other cables

No drop outs a week later
