    surprisingly decent bundle price

Good deal but for such an entry-level kit, I'd go with a standalone Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G lens for $188 from HN and then a cheaper but arguably equally competitive Yongnuo YN-460 II Speedlight for $80 for a total price of $268. Save yourself $60 or buy a nice filter or a spare battery for your camera.

No chance. I have used Sigma/Metz and their Canon/Nikon equivalent. After market's metering and compatibilities can be a hit and miss. Not to mention how quick it recycles, build quality and the like.

Maybe good for very casual usage or amateur usage.

      • Exactly why I recommended Yongnou. You're probably not going to be shooting weddings with a 50/1.8 and an SB-700 anyway. A budget flash would work just fine for an amateur just starting out or testing waters with flash photography

Between $268 and $328, I'd pay the $328 for Nikon's i-TTL wireless flash capability. The Yongnuo YN-460 II only has optical flash triggering, which does not work with modern Nikon DSLRs because they fire a preflash before the actual photo is taken, hence triggering the Yongnuo prematurely.

The last time I used an optically triggered slave flash was in the early 90's……….. Glad to not have to deal with that anymore.

100% agree and the price of this package is phenomenal compared to when it is not in sale and it will hold resale well.

The Yongnuo YN-460 II is a nice flash (I have one myself but use it less and less since upgrading to a fully featured and better build flash) for photographers just starting to dip their toe into flash photography, but I think Nikon did well to include a lot of the features of the SB900 in a smaller and lighter package and for those who just want one flash and are in the Nikon ecosystem it is hard to beat the value here.

      • My Neewer 982ii i-TTL flash and remote triggers are still going strong, since 2015.
