Love the description OP….A good old PVR for grandpa and grandma to watch and record Freeview

  • Too bad you can’t watch over wifi.. guess I’ll stick to TVHeadEnd for now

  • OP, I suggest you remove "Freeview" from your post, there's no mention of it in JB hifi's description.

Freeview is considered a negative to people who know what it really is. Freeview recorders encrypt the recodings, to prevent you from transferring the recording to another device, and limiting you to only watch it on the recorder you used to create the recording.

    • Nice this is not Freeview restricted.

      • The titles can only be recorded to built-in HDD and cannot be copied from built-in HDD to the media other than USB HDD.
      • This unit can record two programs being broadcasted at the same time. Not just record one program while watching another.

      https://www.panasonic.com/au/consumer/home-entertainment/rec…

      • media other than USB HDD

That's annoying, suggests it won't work with USB flash drives. So if you want to put a recording onto a flash drive, you have to copy it to a portable HDD first, then take it to a PC and copy it to the flash drive? I have had a device before that wouldn't recognize USB flash drives, it was annoying.

Worth noting that 1TB USB HDDs are currently $65-$70, and cheap PVRs are $30, so for the same price you could have two separate PVRs, each with 1TB drives. That will let you watch two recorded programs at the same time - maybe one to keep your kids occupied while you watch the other one.

  • This? Or Fetch Migjty (refurb)?

The Fetch does much more, it's technically the superior machine. However it's dependent on Fetch providing support/servers. This will work even if Panasonic go to the wall.

      • Telstra has recently purchased a controlling stake in Fetch, and they will soon migrate all their Telstra TV customers over to the platform.
I'd say they aren't going anywhere.

I've used earlier models of these for perhaps 10 years or more. I have an NVIDIA Shield and Sony smart tvs so plenty of better options for streaming
What does this do for me then? I never watch ads. Even if watching a FTA show at its approximate broadcast time, I start 10 or 15 minutes late, and fast fwd thru all the ads.

Bargain. Good find. I have 2 x Panasonic twin HD recorder PVRs. The first I bought in 2009 and it’s still going strong. It’s actually the main one I use to record free to air because I can watch recorded programs at 1.7x speed. The newer one I have is similar to this one and I use it as overflow if I need to record more than 2 programs at the same time or if it is on a HD channel like Bold or SBS Viceland which my older one no longer detects. The newer one only plays back at 1.3x speed max so I use it less because it’s faster watching a program on the older one. A 1 hour broadcast can be watched in 26 minutes at 1.7x and skipping ads. Very convenient if you’re time poor. The newer one takes about 33 minutes to watch a 1 hour program at 1.3x but is more convenient for skipping ads.

Glad I bought this little gem last week. Thanks OP!

Actually it does have a largish footprint, but it totally delivers. A nice FTA resolution on my Samsung 8000AU. In fact, way better HD FTA rendering - than that of my Fetch Mighty (I've now retired it and my two Fetch minis in favour of just using the Panasonic - plus a Google TV/Tivimate/NVIDIA/Vodafone TV box on my other TVs). This PVR definately has a place in my home. Hate FTA ads. Love fast forwarding through them if I can.

I've gone back to the future with the Panasonic - nostalgia plus!

Low power consumption - 24 Watts Max, with some power saving features. Navigation is fairly responsive. Channel changing quite quick.

The Panasonic was easy to setup for me. Flawless recording so far. Just takes me back to the 90s in terms of it's interface, making me feel right at home. Loaded with features. Integrates well with my Samsung 8000AU 65 inch. I use the Samsung remote to control it's major functions with ease. I can also watch recordings through my LG TV in another room (DLNA).

The Panasonic did a software update upon firing it up.

For the price point - a true bargain. This Grandpa is happy with it.
