Heaps of Spam after Domain Purchase/Hosting from Obble

Hi all.

Just wanted some thoughts on this. I am about to complete a Wordpress course and one of the requirements is that I have a page ready to go and some hosting.

So I signed up to Obble for their cheap hosting service and I used them to purchase the domain I wanted. So far they have been great.

Two days later my email address begun being swamped with Wordpress/SEO/website hosting related spam emails (I am talking around 40 in a few days…) and I have never received spam emails on this topic previously. I also know these relate to my domain as many of them mention the address explicitly.

Besides registering up for the course (which would have no idea what my website is) I genuinely have not signed up to anything else besides Obble.

So did Obble sell my data or did the organisation they purchased the domain off do so? Obble's Privacy Policy seems to restrict this though:

Thanks.

Is your domain registration public or private?

I have multiple domains and hosted sites with obble and never experienced your situation.

My guess is that it's WordPress related.

      Is your domain registration public

I am going to guess public. That'll be where they are getting their email from and spamming them.

It'll have nothing to do with the hosting provider, it'll be the data that it publically available.

Pretty much all domain registration by default will expose your details publicly, unless you choose to protect your contact details on sign up. It will depend on the registrar if it's a free service of they charge a small fee.

It's too late now though, your details have been harvested by the spammers, even changing your details now will not help.

Wow! Thanks guys, I didn't know all of my data would show like that, so yeah it's definitely not Obble! Jesus that's insane!

I gotta work out how to make this thing private without paying!!!

You probably can't, and you're going to get spam for life now unfortunately. If you pay for privacy now you can at least stop new companies from finding your details.

Obble were again great about this and are helping me sort out the privacy settings. Loving these guys!

Sorry mate, we don't check the forums & thought I'd have a browse today and saw our name.

Would've replied much earlier! Glad everyone else here could chip in and help - Definitely don't sell any personal data, but I think we gave you free privacy protection retrospectively. If we didn't, just send us an email and I'll either issue it for free or refund if you did pay it after the registration :)

As said. It may not help, only against new companies but still something. Cheers

      • No you sure did, much appreciated once again! The amount of spam has reduced heaps too, so a massive relief there!

        • Amazing, glad to hear it

  • For .com domain names the best I've found is porkbun.com just about the cheapest price around for dot com domains and free privacy and everything included. $9.13 USD

If you're registering a .au domain name, there is no privacy and your email address will be freely available to the world. Use an alternate email address for this registration if you don't want loads of spam every day. I'm not going to recommend a registrar for this one since I used synergywholesale, but unless you want to pay $99 upfront signup fee or own 50+ domains (to avoid signup free) it's not going to be worth the savings in the short term.
