Melbourne Airport Parking - What Should I Use

I'm going to Melbourne airport on Friday and rolling the dice as to whether I will be boarding the flight to NZ or not (flight is almost full and I'll be going standby)
I will be travelling with 2 kids aged 5 and 1 and they still require car seats.
Usually I would park at the terminal (and bus to terminal) and pre-book for however long I think I will be there however seeing as I don't know whether I will get on the flight or not it seems silly to pay for 10 days of parking that I may not use.
If I use a 3rd party parking service eg Andrew's parking do they use a van to drop you at the terminal? And is it legit for them to drop you in a van without car seats?
Can you park at the long term terminal at the airport without prepaying? Sorry for all the questions, obviously haven't travelled in a very long time.

Best to call Andrews about the Children but I think they get exempt?

    • I have used busy beaver in past with 2 year old and they have a mini van and they said child can just sit on parents lap. So I guess same applies to Andrews.

Pretty sure you can drive up and get a long-term ticket (ie. not pre-book), however, you'll be paying more for that vs pre-book.

Also re Andrews, I think I used them in the past and their drive to/from the airport includes time on the freeway (ie. 100km/h). Safety in a crash would still be an issue regardless of legality.

    • Ah yes, very good point re safety.

  • Can you park at the long term terminal at the airport without prepaying?

Of course you can, the drive up rates appear to be the same as the prebooked rates atm, so just pay the drive up rates.

    • Great intel! Thanks for the tip!

    • Unless its very busy and all prebooked. In that case will be hard to get in if not prebooked.

There's an overflow, I rocked up on easter weekend and had no issues getting a park, they just redirected me to the overflow entrance.

LOL have you ever been to the long term carpark!?

        • Twice over school holidays period and it was very busy

    • Yeah, I highly recommend parking at the terminal. Don’t need to wait around for a shuttle. Only problem is remembering where you parked because if you go to the wrong lift, you’re in for a bad time!

Sure Terminal parking is 'great' and all, but its $49/day vs $12/day in the long term car park. So for a 14 day holiday it is $168 vs $686.

I just traveled to NZ with my 2yo from Melbourne a couple of weeks ago and we used Melrose parking - excellent service, they were able to drop us off in the van without a carseat (she just sat on my knee) and we were at the airport within 5 minutes of leaving our car. You pay when you pick up the car, so it shouldn't matter if you end up cancelling or coming back earlier/later

  • Why don't you wait until the night before the flight and then book the long term parking. It's $12 a day I think and heaps of spots
