Melbourne to St Kilda Airport Transfer Recommendations

Hi all,

I'm hoping for some advice from the local Ozb community.

I have a trip to St Kilda coming up and had planned on getting the Skybus, but it turns out that route is suspended. 2 adults and 2 primary aged kids. The options I've found so far are:

  • Skybus to Melbourne ($76 return) then PT to St Kilda
  • A taxi (~$80 each way)
  • A ride share (~$70 each way)

I'm guessing a ride share is out unless I bring the booster seats on the plane. Any other affordable options?

  • Difference between $76 and $80 is not much at all. A taxi will be much more comfortable and get you to your destination directly instead of going round and round in the bus.

    • $76 is return.

Average time to get from Airport to CBD on the Skybus would be about 30 mins.
Another 30 mins on the 96 tram.
      ~1hr 6 mins.
      YMMV

      ~51min by taxi / uber

The cheapest way would be PT; but I wouldnt want to drag two young kids on a 2 to 2.5 hour PT journey using a bus, a train and tram and then walking to save a few bucks.

$10 of tolls on top for the taxi/uber too, but definitely doesn't seem worth saving $20-30 when you can get door to door and save an hour. One of those times you shouldn't pinch pennies too hard.

Uber used to do kids seats for a fee but I can't see it in the app anymore. Taxis are exempt from needing them, so I'd go that.

$80 from St Kilda to the airport for 4 seems a bargain to me. I'm surprised it's not lots more. You won't get any cheaper short of taking public transport the whole way (which is an absolute nightmare, two trams and a bus, the second tram on the 59 is usually rubbish and packed during peak hour. I live pretty close to the airport and I still uber rather than that for the reduced stress).

You are missing the hybrid approach, Skybus to/from Southern Cross, taxi or uber between Southern Cross and St Kilda (should be $15-20 each way for this leg of the journey).

If your accommodation were directly on the 96 line (which stops at Southern Cross/Skybus), I would be minded to take Skybus/Tram.

    • I did consider a Skybus and Taxi/Uber but it's $25 - $30 each way for a taxi from Southern Cross (at this time anyway) which makes it $136 all up. Probably not worth the $25 saving

      • If you are serious, bus route 901 to broadmeadows and catch the train into the city and then tram to St Kilda.

How can I fly into St Kilda Airport?

  • Thanks all for the replies so far. I'd hoped there might be another bus type approach that I hadn't found online but it looks like a taxi will have to do.

  • Ask a friend or family member.

  • Can't understand why that Skybus route is still suspended. Honestly

  • Melbourne being world class still lacks reliable and fast public transport

  • You could hold off for about 10 years and catch the airport train.
