Skiing/Snowboarding in Tasmania - Bang for Buck Tips?

Hi Everyone,

I will be travelling to Hobart and staying with a friend for a week. I am looking at Skiing/Snowboarding for a couple of these days and wanted to find any tips on tricks for renting equipment and traveling to most likely Mount Mawson.

Is there an affordable shop in town for renting, or any package deals anyone is familiar with?

I currently have no gear but am willing to purchase basics such as helmet/waterproof clothes / thermals.

I'll be going in September also.

Any tips / tricks / transport / shops would be of great help!

Thanks OzBargain Friends

I recommend Salamanca Market on a Saturday.

    • Is that for anything in particular ?

The Salamanca Market is one of Tasmania's most visited tourist attractions and has won many awards for excellence.

I would go there for excellent local advice about snowboarding at Mount Mawson

        • Really? That seems quite bizarre advice. At the hat stall, or the organic farm sausage stall?

Now I would have suggested the cluster of outdoor shops around the corner of Elizabeth and Bathurst streets - one of them hires gear out too.

  • I recommend MONA on a Saturday

      Craig McLachlan agrees with you…

        Check…1-2

      • I'm old enough to get that reference. For everyone else that wants a laugh click here

    • Take the ferry over and ride on some sheep in cattle class. Then go see the poo machine.

If you haven't already, take a look at
    https://mtmawson.info/
the FAQ page sounds like rental gear nearby is unlikely
    https://mtmawson.info/contact/
but if you're heading through Launceston for flights or whatever, there's a post a couple of weeks ago that links to a price list at a store there

Don't even bother skiing here. If you've never skied before then forget it entirely. If you are determined to do it, try it out for a single day and don't commit for more.

If you do end up going to Mt field (where Mt Mawson is) do the three Falls circuit. It's a nice 90 minute walk through nice tassie wilderness.

Public transport doesn't really go anywhere interesting so hopefully your friend can get you around or lend their car.

Your friend down here would probably have good recommendations of places to go.

    • wilderness? A very busy wilderness that's all within 2 or 3km of the Tourist information center, car park and camping. You're only ever about 500m from the road running through the middle of it that will be busy with 4wd's running up to the snow and back again all day. Big wide paths to all the falls, lots of signs. Lots of people and families wandering around. Well the train station at the entrance has been closed for a while, and we are still in post covid so the bus loads of international tourists may not be there. I don't think it has been wilderness for well over 100 years; maybe before it was logged?

Well short of going down to the South coast track, it's a pretty good casual experience.

Day walks on Wellington are nice as long as you get away from the main road.

I can’t imagine Tasmania being an ideal place to learn to ski. There’s only the one club field as far as I know at Mt Mawson. Club fields are generally not well set up for beginners. Probably wait until you’re in Vic, NSW or NZ for your skiing experience.

There's a few at Ben Lomond which is about an hour from Launceston (3.5 from Hobart).
I went to Ben Lomond once and the runs are short, the snow is average and the T-bars give you a bruise after a while.

Mawson only has 72m of elevation which probably gives you an idea of how long the runs would be.
This video gives you a rough idea of of the conditions. Definitely not a place to learn - especially with the rocks and fauna prominently featuring in the runs.
