Why Do You Use OzBargain?

There appears to be considerable difference in the financial situation of each individual on OzBargain. Some people are down near the bottom of the financial ladder, maybe a student, someone with a casual part time job, self-employed or on benefits, while others have 6 figure salaries, working corporate or tech or construction jobs, etc.

I am interested in what it is that draws people to use this website, and the massive difference in what people on here consider to be a "bargain" which of course in real terms is always relative to how much money you have.
A person on <$20,000 a year likely can't truly consider a top of the line $5,000 TV as a bargain, but someone on >$100,000 may think great, that's only a few weeks work!

Haha, yeah i forgot to put "for the ozbargain community" as one of the poll options!

Much like Days of Our Lives, 65 years on still same old dramas story (apparently!).

      • +5

Bargains come and go, but drama lives on (and becomes memes or quiz answers for the treasure hunt).

    • +1

There are a lot of unusual characters who post here.

  • +2

Why can't they consider it a bargain? Not being able to afford it and being a bargain are not mutually exclusive.
There's also a tonne or cheap stuff that comes up including items they may already be buying.

  • +4

When I was a student I saw $5000 fridge and $8000 TV deals and thought "what kind of person who visits a bargain site can afford that?". Now I work full-time, and as I go up the pay-scale I look for better quality stuff that costs more, like TVs and it makes sense (I still don't earn much working for public health).

I wonder where it caps off. I have friends who used to look at OzB who now earn $150-400k who just stopped looking at the prices of things once they hit that $150k ish and just bought what they wanted (who are only getting richer by the day).

The cap depends on individuals. I still think $5000 fridges and $8000 TV are expensive, something I won't even think about. And I've been working full time for almost 25 years.

    • I have friends who used to look at OzB who now earn $150-400k

I want to know what kind of jobs fall into the $300k - $400k band. I'm not even looking at the OzB $250k band because that is just not being ambitious.

      • They're investment bankers, one is a barrister. These friends are in their 30s-50s though. The highest paid friend my age (mid 20s) earns $150k as a solicitor.

It seems investment banking takes you far financially… they get 6-figure bonuses on top which they casually mention at the end of every year, like it's totally normal..

Having worked at banks I can say they got to put the hours in. I used to knock off at 6pm and the food deliveries would pile up at reception for the traders / bankers working late.

I was hoping there was a hidden traffic controller job that might pay that much.

@netjock: I also found that they're way more socially capable than anyone I know, they're so good at talking to people. It's definitely something not anyone can do.

If you find a cushy job paying $300k please send out a PSA and I will buy you all $8000 TVs

    • If I earned 400k a year I'd stop looking at bargains too and instead spend my time trying go grow that 400k a year into even more money.

    C) Forum banter

I guess most people don't get rich by accident.
It's a combination of income and spending habits.

Rich people generally carry these through life.
I learnt how to be frugal in university, even though i'm no longer limited financially old habits die hard and just because you're on 6 figures + doesn't mean you have to spend like you are.

It's also why many people that inherit trusts/win the lotto can be inclined to mismanage them and blow it all as they didn't learn how to live within their means.

Ozbargainers are normal well adjusted people who likes a good bargain and a chat.

Whirlpoolers are government welfare dependent basement dwellers (either fat neckbeards or skinny hipsters) whose main achievement in life is a 5000-10000 post count.

Primarily for the forum humour and secondly for the bargains.

  • +3

Because I'm a sucker for getting anything cheap, regardless of whether I need it or not. But also I like how in almost every bargain discussion and topic, there seems to be someone who is an expert of the item or topic, and I feel like I get some genuinely good information and advice.
