What to Do When eBay Seller Ignores Messages Regarding Warranty Claim?

Hi OzBargainers,
In September last year, I purchased a pair of Philips Diamond Vision headlamp bulbs from an eBay seller based in VIC.
The item's description stated that the bulbs had 2 years warranty.
One of the bulbs recently failed, so I messaged the seller via Ebay to claim on warranty.
I don't think that is unreasonable considering that the OEM bulbs are still functional and are 12 years old.
The seller has ignored my original and subsequent messages.
I am wondering what to do because I have no telephone number or address for the seller.
Navigating eBay "help" is a nightmare and I can't find a category for my particular issue.
Also, there doesn't appear to be a phone number for eBay.
All advice welcome.

    Paypal?

I only ever class a warranty on ebay as being the 180 day Paypal protection period, most sellers will blow you off and not honour their claimed Warranties..

I buy bugger all on ebay these days, unless I can't find it on Amazon etc.

if you get the invoice you can email Philips directly but if the seller is not an authorised seller, it is bad luck, nothing you can do.

    • Thanks I'll give it a go.

What's the status of seller when selling you that bulb last year? If it's private, the seller obligation usually finish by the time item shipped plus ebay 30 day return window.

This. Was it a store or a private seller?

If it is a store, do they have a number or email outside of ebay?

    • It was a store, not a private seller.

    <MOD: Info removed>

    • Thanks, I couldn't find that info.

      • Hopefully it's correct. Maybe an old listing.

    • eBay emailed us asking us to take the media team contact information down. They have received multiple emails in a day on inquiries they don't handle. eBay has advised that they have a help page with chat functionality here:

      https://www.ebay.com.au/help/call_us?type=ContactUs&topicId=…

      • Good luck everyone with finding the chat functionality. It's like searching for Wally :)

Just buy another light and move on… not worth the hassles and going in circles.

I paid $60 and can only buy the bulbs in a pair. Seems wasteful to spend another $60 for one bulb.

      • Is there someone local that stocks it like Beacon Lighting, OW, HN etc?

      • You buy the other pair and have another spare… they are always handy to have.

Sounds like you bought from a dodgy ebay seller. Buy your fakes from aliexpress next time, they are cheaper.

    • Not fake. Genuine Philips with hologram and scratch-to-reveal serial number. The serial number is genuine according to Philip's website.

Buy a new set (from an authorised reseller this time) wait a few months and then claim warranty on it, and return the one that isn't working. You'll have extra bulbs but at least they'll all be working.

        • +3

or buy from the same seller, keep new set and return faulty set and claim that it was dead on arrival.

Try to resolve with the retailer, if that doesn't work or fail to receive a response, contact your local consumer protection agency and take it from there. Exercise your consumer guarantee.

    • Thank you.

I would be more concerned about the non-ADR compliant bulbs than the money for a new bulb, but that's just me.

    • +1

I wasn't aware that whiter halogen bulbs were non-compliant. 🤔
      I'll check it out. Thanks.

      • +2

If it is designed to look blue or very white, there is a very high chance it is not ADR compliant. Also they ironically put out less light, plus when the light bounces off surfaces your pupils contract and you see even less.

For maximum visibility use Phillips +100%.

Also this is a good place to order bulbs from, https://www.powerbulbs.com/au

Thanks that's an awesome website and they have a huge range.
It does say that Philips Diamond Vision bulbs are not road legal but when you drill down it says not road legal in the UK.
I'll contact them for clarification. 👍

@[Deactivated]: Powerbulbs are a UK company hence the warning being for UK, but I know they are not ADR compliant which is Australian.

@AdosHouse: You are correct. Philips have just given me the same information. It appears that the eBay seller has imported the genuine bulbs from Japan where they are road legal.
I managed to find eBay customer service chat which is hidden and they are chasing the seller for a refund.
I'll buy road legal bulbs from the website that you recommended.
              Thanks again 👍

@[Deactivated]: Phillips +100% are the best road bulbs out there, extra light, but legal. Also make sure your headlights are adjusted properly. Dealers and mechanics in the past have pointed my lights basically 5m in front of the car when I've asked.

Also avoid any bulbs which are above 4000k, whiter light reflects off surfaces and mist/water/fog and actually reduces visibility.

  • I have two items worth $70 which have both broken after a couple of months (after 30 days) and having read the ACCC site and spoken to eBay I've figured out the sellers are the ones liable but they're able to hide behind eBay and you have no course of action when they either refuse to help. More commonly they tell you they've sent a replacement when they haven't, or they really want you to be satisfied and please tell them what they can do to help, but they ultimately do nothing at all. I'm just going to stop using eBay altogether. I don't know if Amazon is any better.
