How to remove your Microsoft login from you laptop?

Hello
When I bought my HP laptop I had to enter my Email address and password to be able to set it up. It requires that info to login to my laptop. I need to send it off for repair to HP. However I don’t want them to have those details as it also gives access to my emails and Microsoft account. Does anyone known how to change this? I was thinking to create a guest account perhaps but can you also make that account as administrator? I asked HP but they couldn’t help me.

  • Probably a good idea to disassociate both the account and delete existing data.

Sign in within 60 days and your account is restored, assunming your laptop is back by then. Or this should work on another laptop also.

    Cheers

  • Has HP asked for your info to log in?

I have sent off a Lenovo laptop and they haven't asked for anything, just sent the device. No logins have been requested yet.

They wont log into your account. They can't, and if they ask for your password don't give it. They will probably just run diagnostics from the bios. In fact they might reset the admin password from BIOS and go from there. If you are really worried set up Multi Factor Authentication.

Any good IT person with some experience doesn't need your login details to access ALL your files anyway. MFA won't help. Until Windows makes drive encryption mandatory, it's basically open slather to recover files from say a customer's dead laptop.

A lot of OEMs like HP in their business range have Bitlocker enabled by default 😉

Create a new account on the computer with admin rights.
GIve them the password to that account.

If anything, they may even reformat your drive image, if required .

  • you can't. i tried for many hours around a year ago after microsoft chose to connect my microsoft account for me, as i had been careful to avoid logging into my microsoft account on my computer. i tried all the solutions, none of them worked. i can't reset my computer as i have 6 + terabytes of stuff on it that i want to keep.

if you don't have anything you need on the PC or it's a small amount of stuff that can be easily moved off temporarily, you can reset the entire device.

  • Thanks everyone. I might see if I can get create a new account with Admin rights just in case.

We did a BIO’s “update” and it didn’t fix the problem. (Some of the buttons aren’t working on the keyboard and it failed the keyboard test)

I wonder if it’s worth buying a new laptop all together.
