Dell XPS 13 Plus or MacBook Air M2

Those who own one of these devices, if you could please share your experience. that would be awesome. So keen on buying the new Dell XPS 13 plus.
The top specs ended up at $3,194.03 at the time of posting However, reading the reviews doesn't have good reviews for battery if I choose the OLED version.
Unfortunately, the touch isn't available in FHD+. Only available in UHD+ or the OLED.
Other specs are fantastic! 12th Gen i7-1260P, DDR5, Thunderbolt 4

Cons: battery if going with a touch

Mac air M2, better battery life, better camera,
non-touch
thunderbolt 3
M2?
works with only one external display

Note: Portability is crucial for me.

M2 air isn't out yet so no reviews to look at.

What are you using your computer for? If gaming windows is the only way. For web browsing the M series chips have blisteringly fast single threaded performance which will make it feel super snappy.

What mobile phone do you use? If iPhone I'd say go Mac for all the integration they have. If android look closer at windows.

How often have you used touch on your existing PC? Do you have an iPad? I've never used the touch on my surface pro…

M2 all day I have an m1 pro 16 and it is mind bogglingly fast. Years later you will regret anything else

      That's too heavy and chunky.

yeah so get the air perf will be similar

  • XPS all the way

    I have a MB Pro M1, and it's great.

    Cons -
    * Windows is easier and more logical than MacOs
    * Non- touchscreen (Also Expensive to repair)
    * Not upgradeable Internally
    * Only supports 1 Display (though there are workarounds)
    * Only 2 x USBC ports
    * Requires a decent hub - Dockmule?

This is exactly the situation I'm faced with. Personally I'm leaning towards the M2 for the following reasons:

    Battery life
Single screen is ok for me because I have a 38"
    Performance on battery
Instant on (wake times on windows 11 seem really inconsistent)
Longevity - I've never had a windows laptop last more than a couple years before feeling really bogged down whereas even my 2013 MacBook Pro is still being used by my wife with zero complaints
Ports - feels incredible to say that the air wins this because you can use MagSafe to charge and still have 2 free Thunderbolt ports free. Plus headphone jack is handy every now and then
Webcam - not normally a consideration but since I remote work quite a bit the better webcam makes a small difference
I can use it with my iPad for sidecar and continuity

IMO if you're buying a laptop, get a Mac. If you're going desktop, go PC

    • I still have my Acer 2 in 1 from 2014, though the battery is now failing, and I replaced it pretty much with a MS Surface Go & Macbook Pro.
I can't use Sidecar, as my iPad is 5th Gen.

      • For most things my XPS13 from 2017 is good enough, but it really struggles with lightroom or if I have multiple browser windows/tabs open. If only I could upgrade the CPU on it. I'd also consider the framework but they still don't ship to Aus and I cbf with dropshipping etc

I would say Macbook Air M2. I have a XPS that's about 3 years old - not particularly impressed with dell and the product design. It's not the new Plus version but I think Dell need to work on getting some fundamental functions right. My brother has the Macbook A M1. He loves the fanless design and the battery life.

Do you want windows or do you want macOS? If you know the answer to that question everything else is moot (specs vs specs).

  • My primary computers have always been windows OS. The only time I use a mac is when I help others.
I use iPhone for work and an Android phone for personal use.
It won't make a huge difference for my work if I use a mac or windows. All the apps are available for both Mac and Windows OS.
However, I've noticed that I back up my Desktop, Documents and Pictures on one drive, which is helpful. Follow me everywhere.
Not sure if that's something possible out of the box on the Mac. Touch is an advantage, not a massive deal for me. I use x1 carbon with touch. Sometimes really helpful.

If I am paying anything above $3K. I want the laptop should handle video and photo editing too.

A family member just got the XPS 13 Plus - i5 version, but with the OLED touch screen. Initial thoughts are very positive (I currently have a 2018 Intel MBA), but the 'touch bar' and the trackpad design do take some getting used to.

Don't forget the edu coupon too!

  • "Those who own one of these devices"

"MacBook Air with M2 chip available in July."

  • For the information of all interested, it appears preorders for Macbook Air M2's will go up on July 8th, with the product going on sale a week later on the 15th.

  • I'll go with macbook air m2. Never owned an apple laptop before. It'll be an interesting one. I'll wait for the preorder. So annoying of apple 24GB memory. Why not 32. Keep the sequence.

    • But 24 is part of the sequence? 32 would be next in line. Would have made sense to offer a 32GB option though, maybe 24 is all the M2 can handle/needs?

  • Max Tech review - TLDR, XPS screen/SSD/ are good. M2 smokes the XPS in performance - https://youtu.be/ciqX1l3s2F8

That's crazy. I'm just curious if I choose the macbook air. That one has no fan. How it's going to perform running similar scenarios.

      • Exactly the review I am waiting for. I have it on my purchase list, but very worried it will throttle when hot.

        • +1

Same here. I'm looking at upgrading to 16gb/512gb and 10 core GPU as well… Which puts it within spitting distance of the 14 MBP. Wondering if I should just deal with the extra size and weight and go the 14 instead. Will have to see what reviews say

          • +1

@chartparker: True my thoughts also. Might be better to have an M1 that can run close to full speed with a fan vs an M2 that throttles and slows down due to no fan

  • After the reviews, I won't' be going for MBA M2. Going to buy the 14inch M1 Pro

    • Same here. Shame really it had so much promise. If it had either better cooling or a lower price it would've been more attractive

      • +1

Purchased the 14 " M1 Pro from jb. Price matching the Officeworks 2697.

Nice one! I've got to wait a couple of months to save up some money first 🙁

  • I have noticed my mac now gets charged while connected via USB C to the monitor. I was just wondering if it's okay if it's getting charged while using? Any harm to the battery?

    • I think they have automatic battery management now so it should manage itself, but if you're sitting plugged in for long amounts of time it's not gonna do any favours to the battery health long term

      P.S: how's the 14 pro? I'm a little bit jelly

      • Hmm, I think I've to switch to HDMI then. It's really good. I've found it performing it very well for me.
I don't play games. I only use it for Devops purposes.

So far so good. I feel like I wish bought the 32GB one. Though I haven't maxed it out yet. The Web cam notch is annoying me.

        All good so far.
