Upgrading my 17yo Sony Bravia LCD Workhorse

Hi My beloved 46” Sony Bravia has finally died after 17 years of faithful service. Im looking to buy a new one tomorrow with JBs 15% off for first responders. Budget of $1500 after discount. What would people recommend in the 50-60” range? Mostly to be used for watching live sport AFL, Cricket etc

Comments

  • Can it be fixed? I fixed my Bravia for a trivial $100 and an hour of my time to change the board.
Older models can usually be fixed easier.

My wife is talking something about a “smart tv”. It’s been a while since buying a tv

      • Would recommend against a smart TV, they get slow faster, sometimes packaged with ads clunky interface. I would recommend an NVIDIA shield to power your smart watching

Stretch the budget if your going to hold onto this one just as long, if it lasts… and get the Sony 55" OLED https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/sony-a80j-55-bravia-xr-ol…

    You will not be disappointed

with JBs 15% off for first responders

Dsicount sounds good, but still do your due diligence.

  • Check if you have access to Samsung EPP, I think they have 25% off RRP on TV, which might be better than JB’s 15% off

The guy has had a Sony for 17 years.

Not going to want something that sets the house on fire in 6 months.

      • how would a samsung tv set house on fire? I thought it was samsung mobile?

Just make sure it has real HDR, which means zoned backlighting. Some TVs don't have dimmable zoned backlighting and they still call themselves HDR. The smaller the zone the better, it'll make your TV feel lightyears ahead of your old one.

Already mentioned, but don't get smart tv. Or get one but don't use the apps. Get another box to do the smart things. Also, get a better set of speakers.

Buy a good tv and you don't need an android box for it. Put the money towards the tv.
