Why Is Everyone Suddenly Buying Tissue Boxes?

Hi all

Apologies if I've been living under a rock but my local woolies / coles / aldi have been out-of-stock of tissue boxes. I understand it's flu season surely people aren't getting that sick during these WFH times to the point where stock-levels are like beginning-of-covid toilet paper shortages.

Is everyone just getting so ill or has not everyone figured that you can also use toilet paper?

    • what if a boy and a girl watch the same movie together? which "movie" will consume more tissues? this is very difficult but important question

Missus and I have the flu. And everyone we know has gone through either that or a cold in the past few weeks.

Also when we visited a chemist a few days ago the shelves had been stripped of Codral and all the other brand variants of it.

So I'm going to invoke Occam's Razor here - there's no tissue paper because everyone is sick.

The lack of raw pulp is the issue. Australia doesn't have enough people to cause a shortage. Russia was one of the largest supplies of raw pulp in the world, they have also causing an energy crisis in Europe, pushing the cost through the roof.

    • Even panadol couldn't be found at my local chemist.

  • New videos on PornHub?

    • I find paper towels also do this a good job

  • You can stock pile anything apparently!

  • Flu Season, the whole family got it.

I thought all the tissue boxes missing from shops and all the people off work at the moment was a bit over the top but then I got very severe flu a few weeks ago and understand completely.

  • Thanks for the heads up, gonna raid the next suburbs supermarkets of tissues.

Just get baby wipes. About the same price. As a bonus, they’re made of plastic, so no trees are slaughtered to produce them

  • Flu and Covid during winter. On a side note, paper pulp is also running out, so expect large increases in pricing. People need to understand how much raw pulp Russia supplies the world.

Buy some hankies and move on with life.

    • I never understood and never will handkerchiefs. So you blow your nose with all that snot into it and scrunch it in your pocket.. that's just incredibly unsanitary.

      • +1

For the majority of the year, carrying a handkerchief is just a safety net of having something handy in case of a random sneeze, or whatever. I'd much rather catch the aftermath of the one-off in the handkerchief than walk around with a grotty arm after a "vampire sneeze".

I do break out the tissue boxes for the rare instances where I'm really unwell, but I'm still amongst the old-school folk who carry a clean handkerchief or two day-to-day.

Before the Covid scam told us us that influenza/flu doesn't exist anymore, we had this thing called "Flu Season". Usually comes around the winter months, like now. When people people get a cold/flu, runny noses usually accompanies it so people buy tissues to blow their noses.
    Welcome to Earth.

Head cold going around that makes a lot of snot and last 1-2 weeks. It's been through everyone in our house and yes we've been buying and using lots of tissues.
Except for sinus infections I've never blown so much snot.

  • Flu season. And when you get sick its sticking around longer too. Our family has been absolutely smashing the tissues lately… even after we've all had COVID.

  • My various locals and ones I've opportunistically stopped by haven't had empty tissue box shelves for months. Luckily enough to hold out but can't believe it's still like this, and seemingly getting worse.

  • If you're still looking for some, I think this has a decent price

Shops and manufacturers make an assumption of how much stock they need based on historical purchase data.

Some idiot at some random place will take a photo or use and old photo of empty shelves and either incorrectly or purposely falsely claim that stock is low.

Then some jackass reporter will make an article saying there's a shortage because it makes for good click bait.

Some idiots will get scared and buy a couple more of something they don't really need, but just to be safe they'll get more

Even if a small handful of people buy more of something than what the shop has predicted, the shelt become empty

Everyone else panics and does the same where they can.

All of a sudden. We have a faux shortage.

    • Perfect marketing strategy, lol.

Duno, but going to the super now to panic buy all box, roll, and tissue related stuff now.
Maybe i'll stock up on baking paper too, since it's a roll and paper.

  • I just buy them for my kids. It’s cheaper than lego and they can build life sized cubby houses with them.

  • i have a cold that's been going for 6 days now, i've been blowing through boxes of tissues a day. I think i have a sinus infection maybe, i've never blew so much snot in my life.

    • And how about those sneezes which suddenly come up on you unannounced and leave you with dual green-white thick trails down to your bottom lip. And just when you think you've emptied it out and cleaned everything up, you feel you need to blow out another loud again to get some relief.

The Reject Shop sells 236 x 2ply tissues for $1.30, same price as the supermarket 224 tissue boxes. I went yesterday and there was only ONE single box left on the shelf.

  • No idea I just use a bunch of tea towels and the laundry them save money but the smell can get quite strong

My whole family have been sick for 2 months on 3rd bug now. It’s insane. I think we’ve used about 60 boxes of tissues so far. I’ve never been so sick. I’m masking up from now on once I recover and will be avoiding malls, indoor dining etc.

  • Why is there a shortage of toilet paper and tissues if that is made in Australia and it was spuiked during the covid period that this item is plenty available.

  • +1

There's so much sickness going around lately, it's incredible.
Please, if you have to go out while you're suffering through a contagious illness (and you don't want to wear a mask), then could you please cover your mouth when sneezing/coughing. It's just a 2-second inconvenience for you, but 2-3 fewer weeks of suffering for those who happen to be near you breathing in your sneeze. I find it hard to believe that we just came out of 2 years of various restrictions and reminders about curbing the spread of disease, yet so many of us have gone straight back to old habits…

  • Not me buying them - I've been waiting for a special for many many months, and no luck yet.

There's no way production is at a normal level IMO

  • I'm 10 days into my cold at the moment and have used two boxes of tissues already.
I'm hoping there are tissues left at the supermarket when I go tonight.

  • Annoying the ones they have I'm stock are the $2.50+ tissues that last a third as long as the $1 ones. Good tactics to force people to buy what they have to!

  • Huge stock available at Derrimut (VIC) Coles today!
