Maccas McPlant Burger Is Here [VIC]

https://www.pedestrian.tv/bites/mcdonalds-mcplant-beyond-mea…

They sell the McPlant in UK McDonalds. We didn’t have those here. All we have is the closest thing is a Hungry Jacks Rebel whopper 🙂

Update: So basically It tastes like the rebel whopper but if McDonald's made it and less hungry jacksy.

This burger is the perfect option for any customer seeking a plant-based option on the menu. The McPlant burger is not classified as Vegetarian or Vegan, rather it is presented as a plant-based option -Facebook NGI Group.

They are saying it is only a "trial" and only at the 270 locations in Victoria. They have also clarified that they are using a proprietary burger made for them by Beyond.
Is the McPlant vegan? No. The patty itself does not contain any animal derived ingredients, but it will be cooked on the same grill alongside beef, chicken, pork and egg products. It also comes standard with dairy cheese and egg in the McChicken sauce.
McDonald's has made it clear that they do no consider the McPlant either vegetarian or vegan. They will not be making any effort to avoid contamination with animal products or use seperate utensils, clean a section of the grill, etc. Is the McPlant plant based? It can be made plant based if you ask for no cheese and no McChicken sauce.

What are the ingredients and nutritional info?

  • +6

Made from lettuce so it costs more than a 3080

Nobody hates vegans more than me, but can somebody explain the logic behind the bolded bit? Surely McDonalds realise they're icing out a core target audience for their burger, right?

    • +5

Surely McDonalds realise they're icing out a core target audience for their burger, right?

      I doubt it…

It is just marketing… An image thing, that they are doing the 'right thing', so their regular customers feel content…

    • +10

Why do you hate people just because they've made a choice?

That's a pretty weird existence you got there.

      • +1

I'm assuming it's a comedy bit (you know, 90's Denis Leary stand-up stuff about vegetarians and non-smokers etc)

        Well, 'comedy'.

      • +3

Probably more about the ones that attempt to force that choice onto others :P

        • There's good reasons, sure, but who needs a good reason though? Why can't the hatred just be whimsical?

        • Never seen a vegan try and force feed a non vegan. Does this really happen???

          • @MontyMacaw: Google "Tash Peterson". It's a funny joke.

            • @TanedaR: I googled her but there is so many references. Can you be more specific? I enjoy a good joke.

      • +1

Why do you hate people just because they've made a choice?

I think the question should be put to those who have made THAT choice.
It's those people that go and mess up restaurants and factories/farms. I've never heard-of or seen anyone go and mess up vegan restaurants before - have you?

        • Also, have you ever heard an omnivorous eater (aka non vegetarian only) constantly trying to convince others that their chosen diet is soooooo much better, sustainable and humane than their vegetable based diet? Social oppression anyone?

          As the joke goes:
Q: How do you know someone is a vegetarian? A: Because they will loudly tell you!!!

          • -1

@LFO: Why is that a joke? I think the opposite appears more to be true based on comments here. Oh and neither is funny therefore fails by definition to be a joke - you know where everyone thinks it’s funny.

            • -1

              @MontyMacaw:

you know where everyone thinks it’s funny.

Well, everyone that is NOT a vegan nor vegetarian will find it funny.
              Isn't that funny ;-p

    • +4

They're not committing to cleaning the grill/having a separate non grill for the plant patties. Yes, this is terrible for actual vegetarian/vegan would-be buyers, but they're hoping the vegans won't ask [or be able to see them being cooked].

The thing you're quoting is not a McDonalds announcement but commentary on it.

      • they're hoping the vegans won't ask

Did they do any market research at all?

        • +2

Dyed in the wool vegans wouldn't set foot in a McDonalds for these very reasons (and aren't the target market).

But "eh, I'll try something new / oh, that looks like a healthy option" type casuls won't have a problem buying one of these.

    • +3

My vegetarian parents won't even eat this because it's now sort of cooked in animal fat, so they've lost the vegans and vegetarians

      • +2

        My vegetarian parents

That's too small a market segment for them to worry about…

        • +2

We're from an Asian culture so word spreads to our 10000 vegetarian family members who spread it to their 10000 vegetarian family members and so forth..

          • +1

@peppet: Do they all eat at Maccas now?

            • @jv: They totally would if it was vegetarian

              • +1

@peppet: So they are not currently customers?

                • @jv: Sure are for the "vegan" fries and gross soft drink

                  • @peppet: what about the salads?

                    • +1

@jv: Ain't nobody paying money for a maccas salad

                      • +1

@peppet: Ain't nobody paying money for a McPlant Burger either

                        It's just marketing…

          • @peppet:

We're from an Asian culture so word spreads to our 10000 vegetarian family members who spread it to their 10000 vegetarian family members and so forth..

Based on this, that's currently 4 times the population of Australia on just the first degree of family separation, and far exceeding the entire world population on just the third (your first so forth level)

Based on this I have determined that vegetarians are terrible at maths, or you're more connected than Kevin Bacon (which would be ironic)

            • +1

@SBOB: Because they have 1000 friends to talk to? I like the Kevin BACON reference though. I see what you did there 🤣🤣🤣

      • Only if they know. Or wondered. That's what mcd are relying on…. that they don't.

    • +4

This is pure marketing, probably less than 1% of us vegan and if maccas came up with a pure vegan meal, it probably cost them $50 per meal with all the dedicated equipment.

And as if Vegan gonna visit maccas.

      • +1

Yep, they are betting on a large group of their existing customers eaten there more often now believing this is healthier for them. They wouldn't give a rat's about which grill was used to cook it…

        • +1

Speaking of rats, we had a vegan restaurant in China town and authorities warn them and fine them twice for having rats. But owners excuse is that we are vegan we can't kill rats, eventually they got closed down ;)

      • +2

Vegan maybe not. But I don't eat most meat for personal health and ethical reasons and I can't eat a burger cooked on a plate with animal ingredients… that I know about. Ignorance truely is bliss. Once you commit to yourself to ask and care about your food choices, it takes a lot of effort at times. Worth it but just saying it's not only ppl being labelled as vegans, that care.

        • If you have health issues, it would be safer to stick to home made food, I wouldn't risk it.
That's why most food got warning saying it may contains nuts, it's not economical to make them in dedicated machines just for small segment of people.

And question for you, if there is no health issues, is it ethically ok to throw a vegan food just because it got contaminated by meat fat? Then again there are people feel eww for meat or certain type of meat. Each to their own. But Maccas here promoting for just marketing.
I'm do eat meat but I rather eat vegetarian food rather than pretend meat like food.

    • +1

It’s the exact same situation with the rebel whopper at hungry jacks.
100% of the vegans I know don’t really care and regularly eat them

    • +2

They're pre-empting the reaction they'll get later when certain people suddenly try claim that their "vegan" burgers are contaminated.

    • +1

I think the theory is that meat is one of the biggest contributors to global warming and hunger. More cattle exists than humans and all their waste is flowing untreated into rivers and oceans, we have more agriculture dedicated to cattle feed than human food, and a million other reasons people think of. If we could all reduce our meat intake a little it would make a big difference. Not talking about going vegan, just smaller portions and maybe not every day. So it's a pretty good incentive.

Ps. Every burger requires about 1000 liters of drink water apparently. So why have short showers if you can just skip on a burger each week? Why isn't this general knowledge? Meat industry is stronger than tobacco and oil industries combined and very powerful. Meat industry fund and promote most of the organisations that should be telling us to eat less meat, but if that message goes out than that funding will stop… it's all money…

    • @whatsherproblem Tell us why you hate vegans oh great one? Is it just your nature to pick a section of society with mixed backgrounds and beliefs that may or may not have declared their beliefs to hate or is there some deep seated personal issue you have about people who prefer a particular diet? Do you hate any my other groups or is this a vegan only affliction?

    • +1

Vegans are almost as bad as people who use anime avatars. Buncha sickos.

  • Wen 🐛 🐜 🍔 #McDonald's?

  • +2

They have also clarified that they are using a proprietary burger made for them by Beyond.

Bill Gates was an early investor in Beyond Meats. He'll die trying to get everyone to eat fake meat.

    • -2

Thank God peeltheonion deleted his account, who knows what would have happened in this thread otherwise.

  • +1

Looking forward to their McPlant Nuggets.

    • +3

They already probably don't put any chicken in the chicken nuggets, so what would change really?

  • +2

I'm hanging on for the McCricket.

    • They'll hop on it for sure…

  • At least they’re reasonably honest about it. When I got a rebel whopper I was so gutted that it had no meat… The name sounds meaty

  • Cool but why does VIC get it before QLD when QLD elected more Greens to parliament?

    • These cause more flatulence so isn't endorsed by the Greens.

Dan is pretty keen on flatulence though.

  • This is so silly. In an era where the vegan and vegetarian market is increasing why you would not cater to this crowd amazes me. Almost every single restaurant now caters to this segment except maccas. When I migrated to Australia nearly 20years ago you would be lucky to find a few places that had options that weren't fries.

I am personally vegetarian and have been for over a decade and so is most of my family. We actively go to hungry Jack's instead of maccas when we want this sort of meal. If maccas provided a suitable option I would be visiting more frequently. I know many others like me.

Plant based burger = lots of processing to make it edible

  • The market for plant based is growing but growing slower in the fast takeaway market. The added cost of extra designated plant only grill. Not just in the cost of the grill but the extra space required doesn't yet warrant it.

It will one day but the vast majority of Macca's customers are not vegan or vegetarian Macca's spends millions on market research each year.

  • I had the Impossible Whopper (in the US), hard to tell difference from the real thing. Friend felt the same way.

  • And here we have another arced up thread based on bigotry against vegans. Thank you for the entertainment you always provide me: I look forward to the next instalment.

  • The aldi plant based nuggets taste more like chicken than maccas nuggets do. Btw they are made by inghams.

    • +1

Btw they are made by inghams.

They are made by chickens, not of chickens…

    • Nice but im not vegan

    • +1

      Probably a forums post

      • +3

Doubt it… Why litter the forums…

    • This is the same style of vegetarian as the Rebel burger from HJ.

per McDonald’s statement, is also prepared on the same grill as menu items made with animal products.

    • The worst thing about this, and all similar products,

Is that the hipster vegan wanks pay for it. They don't have to bust out a promotion or do anything special or anything to try to get me to eat it, the vegos just go for it and pay whatever they ask, it's insane. I'd like to try a vegan cheeseburger or something sometime, always interested to see if they can make anything even remotely taste like meat, but like, I ain't paying a tonne to take a gamble on something I almost certainly won't like.

In any case, as there's no promotion or discount, no deal.

    • +4

From the link " however, the patty will be cooked on the same grill as meat-based products and eggs."

I don't know any vegetarians who are going to eat a burger that's been frying up in beef fat, so unless they cook it on it's own grill (or clean it before cooking this up) it doesn't seem there is much of a point to offering this up.

I would have given it a chance if it wasn't being cooked up with meat.

A bit surprising McD can't seem to figure out how to do a veggie burger, it's not that hard!

      • Agreed. It is very disturbing that Ronald would impose on fair-minded meat-eaters by contaminating their meat-based burger patties with peas and lentils, which many are philosophically, environmentally, ideologically or religiously opposed to.

        Cancel Maccas!!!
