What would be my camera worth?

Hiya Ozbargain,

I need your expertise on how much my camera is currently worth if I was to sell it today:

The kit contains:

  • Canon 500D
  • Canon Zoom 18-55mm EF-S IS Lens
  • Canon Zoom 55-250mm EF-S Lens
  • Canon 50mm EF f/1.8 II Lens

All in excellent condition.

Thanks for your time and have a good Sunday.

  • You can buy the Canon 550D with twin lens kit brand new for less than $1000, so your 500D is obviously worth less than that.

For the body and single lens it's worth around $500, with the additional lens you might be able to sell it for $750, but at that price it's very close to the new cost so not many people will bite.

Depends how keen you are to sell..

    • Thanks for the reply mate, appreciate it.

I am a little keen to sell as the camera is depreciating faster than I expected. Also, I guess it depends on finding the right buyer to get that $750 (I have been getting offers of 600-700$)

      Thanks.

Just take the $700 if you don't get any better offers for a week or so.. remember the longer you wait the more it loses value

        • $750 is a bit high and definitely would be the best case scenario, $600-700 is a more likely figure. I'd say just take the $700, after all this camera is 3 years old and "2 generations" have come out (replaced by the 550d and then the 600d if you do consider the 600d to be a replacement since the 550d is still produced). And the only reason it's still at 600-700 is because of the lenses, lenses don't depreciate as rapidly as the body.
$75 for the prime, $100ish for the kit lens and $150 I think for the 55-250mm. Whatever it is left that makes up the $600-700 is for the body and that's only going to go down whereas the lenses will stay roughly at that price.

Haven't kept up to date, but I think canon are up for a refreshment on their entry lines

  • Honestly? I'd probably only say $12.50. If anyone offers you anything more than that, you should take it!!!

    Looks at coins nearby…….

I'll give you $12.75! Def take it!

P.S, good luck getting rid of it though, the $600-$700 range does sound the most likely. If someone is offering the $700, take it!

Ooooooh is there no way you can push it up to $13 mister? :-)

Thanks for the input everybody. Appreciate it.

  • I recently sold my Nikon d5000 with twin lense kit, a extra Nikon battery and a Nissan di466 flash all in brand new condition shutter count of d5000 only 3000 actuations. I sold this kit on eBay for $561 plus $20 postage so you'd be lucky to get $600 for your kit in my opinion.

  • If you're getting offers of $600 - $700 on a three year old camera you're doing well. Take it and run.
