Gross booze - Ratu 8yo Rum Liqueur

I went to Fiji and got some duty free.
Oh boy is this disgusting.

I made sure not to get a spiced rum (also bleurgh) but I made a big mistake not noticing the word "liqueur" on the label. Why they matured a rum for 8 years and then sweetened it I have no idea.

Annoyingly I've had the 5 year before and it was actually fine.

So what the hell do I do with this stuff? I've got one unopened bottle and one nearly full.. does anyone buy it? Should I just hang around outside a school and sell it to some kids?

  • With ice in summer? Cooking? Mixer in cocktails?

Probably the most well known cocktail classic using specifically rum liqueur is the Hurricane, a great summer drink.
      This recipe seems pretty good

Thanks, I haven't heard of that. Chances of buying grenadine are pretty slim though.

        • Didn’t neg ya

          But broooo

Granadine x ice cold cola (a Roy rogers) on a summer day is refreshing as hell

    • At the moment I've only got "ice cream topping" and custard additive but maybe it's time I baked a rum baba.

    All great suggestions.

Or ya know, perhaps just live with the wasted $40 and move on…

    • Two bottles!

I think it was more that I could have got something better in my booze allowance, and the crime of adulterating an 8yo rum.

It smells terrific, I'll give you that.

Sounds like a great one to give to guests generously

  • Gross booze

I clicked because I thought you meant copious amounts of.

    • What's the best thing for a hangover?

      Drinking heavily the night before

      • Dunno. Fortunately I don't really get them these days, even after a heavy night. Tired yes, hangover no. (Maybe my heavy is not as heavy as some?)

  • Not the same but I got the coconut white rum and have been really enjoying it mixed with orange juice.

I assume you've tried mixing the 8yo with either cola or juice?

    • I'll give it a try. When neat the smell is wonderful but the flavour is pretty artificial. Not sure if even the magic cola can fix it.

      • Might be worth looking up some Fijian cocktail recipes. I'm sure the 8yo rum has a place in one of the recipes.

Given it's winter and this booze might benefit from additives, get a hot rum toddy going. Or save it for a summer punch bowl.
