Boost Mobile Gift Card Not Accepted as Payment for Recharge

Tried to use a $50 Boost eGift card as payment towards a $200 recharge.

Gift card is this one. Boost would not accept it as recharges must be paid in full in a single transaction. This was not clearly outlined anywhere in the gift cards terms of service or (as far as I could see) on the Boost website. I was only able to see by digging through the ACL; the gift card part of the ACL has specific exclusions for prepaid mobile recharge.

The service guy on the chat said "There's no misleading on it it's how a customer understand on how recharge payment options works for pre-paid" - is that fair to say or do I have a valid complaint that the terms of service were not clear.

So you reckon the word "Recharge" covers them to mean that the value of the gift card will be restricted to a transaction of the card value only? Because I read that to mean that I had to spend it all in one go

      • I will let others decide on the definitions.

I'm not really sure how they expect you to use it?

You paid for a $50 per-paid recharge like the customer service representative mentioned.

    • Recharge No. can only be used once.
  • I'd definitely be annoyed.

The way I read the following is that the gift card recharge can only be used once - not that the full amount of the gift card can't be used as partial payment towards a Boost purchase

For example if you buy a $40 plan using a $50 gift card - then you would lose the remaining $10 value of your gift card.

    • Recharge No. can only be used once.
    • Yeah that's how I thought it worked too (wrongly apparently).

Didn't help the service guy kept implying I was an idiot "It is actually under the Australian Consumer Law section 000125698 imposed with legal consent by The Australian Government which majority of Australians are aware off". Hahaha please

      • You could say he assumed Alice Is Stupid …. Ba dum tssss

At best, their wording is confusing.
Their lack of 'service' guy is good at reading a script and would have no idea what he is even quoting.

The seller of the card also has a responsibility to make sure that T&C's are easy to understand.
You could potentially request a refund from them.

      • Is that really the quote? I've never a seen a legislation section with leading 0s and the ACL is imposed by the Parliament (Government consent is irrelevant).

It sounds to me like you either misheard/misquoted or their "service" rep was trying to bluff you. Fair-trading would be interested if they are misrepresenting the ACL.

        • Yep that was copy/paste from the transcript of our chat. I tried searching the number and couldn’t find squat
