2 Day Travel Insurance for Skiing?

I have a two week trip in New Zealand coming up, my credit card insurance will work fine for those two weeks.

The issue is I'm going skiing for two days, does anyone know of a reasonable place to get insurance just for those two days?

I called Insure and Go and they said if the insurance period does not cover the day I leave and arrive back in Australia then the entire insurance is void.

Even then I've found a lot of places are charging a lot for two days with only a small increase in price to change it to 1-2 weeks.

Any suggestions?

  • What are you trying to insure against, for those two days?

    • Only a ski injury, nothing else.

I'm just not sure what that might involve, helicopter pickup? Some sort of other expense?

With New Zealand having an agreement with Australia for medical its not clear what the expenses would be.

      • helicopter pickup

Have you ever skiied before? If not, very unlikely.

        • It will be the first time.

Does that mean you think extra travel insurance is unnecessary?

          • @samfisher5986: if this is your first time
and you going for two days you will be on the bunny slopes for a while and would expect you to be going up chair lifts and skiing extreme runs

check your existing policy, does it cover skiing (or does it deem it as a high risk activity)

what level of medical cover do you have (unlimited? what does it cover)

            • @djones145: It will be beginner slopes mostly, perhaps something more depending on difficulty.

              Existing policy doesn't cover it.

I believe the existing cover is unlimited medical but doesn't cover skiing.

          • @samfisher5986: If it's your first time, unless you somehow get in the way of an experience skier zooming down the slopes, or like throwing yourself off cliffs, you'll be pretty safe.

You'll spend the first half day probably hiring skis, etc, and the rest of the time on flats and gentle slopes that you climb up yourself. You'll most likely only snow plough down the gentle slopes - for most people it's very hard to get injured this way.

But you could slip on ice somewhere… and crack your skull and need to be airlifted to the nearest hospital. Best way to mitigate is to wear a helmet everywhere. /s but is a risk.

  • Yeah, you probably won't find this available. CBA ultimate card gives coverage that includes skiing if you have one though…

  • I called Insure and Go and they said if the insurance period does not cover the day I leave and arrive back in Australia then the entire insurance is void.

Pretty standard clause, it is to stop people doing basically what you are doing. Take out insurance for a few days to cover the 'risky' part of the trip.

  • Can you pay a little extra for your credit card insurance to cover snow? Sometimes this is an optional addon. Check your policy document for details.

  • It doesn’t really work to insure just for those two days. If you have a serious enough injury you might miss your flight outside of those two days. You hospital care might be beyond those two days etc. Anyway there is reciprocal healthcare with NZ so anything ‘essential’ like retrieval and public hospital care for serious injuries would be covered. If you sprain your ankle or something and need to go to a GP it will be pay out of pocket. Be mindful that some places like Wanaka don’t have a public hospital though so you’d have to travel to where the nearest public hospital is if relying on the public system.
