SYD - HKT, but in the Gold Coast in the leadup...

Picture this first-world-problem:

You've already organised to go to Phuket from Sydney (where you live) with some close friends on 4th-Fakeuary, departing at 1430 from SYD, all paid and booked.
But some other close friends have invited you to come to the Gold Coast for a special celebration from 1st-Fakeuary to 10th-Fakeuary.
You decide you'll go to both, in fact, you'll go up a few days before your Gold Coast friends arrive on 1st-Fakeuary and spend some alone time with your significant other.

Problem is, you don't know whether to leave for Sydney from the Gold Coast the night before or the morning of.

You've got people with opinions on all sides.
You've already asked your airline if you could add an OOL - SYD leg to your SYD - HKT ticket to protect you, but they've said NO.

You could leave the night before, but the last flight departs OOL at 1800 (not exact, but close enough), meaning you lose an entire night of dinners/celebrating with these people, you'll have to be at the airport at 1700 (at least?), all for the sake of being what some would call "weirdly safe".
OR
You could leave the morning of, you'll take the first flight out that way you get that extra night with your close friends, you'll arrive in SYD at 0730, your family will bring your Thailand bags to you at the airport, check-in closes at 1330, you've got 6 hours between arriving in SYD and check-in for your Phuket flight closing!

What do you do?!

Leave the night before, Depart OOL at 1800 - Too risky otherwise!

Leave the morning of, Arrive SYD 0730 - flights should be on time, and that's plenty of time!

    The struggle is real.

      What would you do?

There are plenty of daily flights OOL-SYD. Your SYD-HKT flight is only at 1430. You only need to be at SYD at 1230. The flight is just over an hour OOL-SYD. Get any flight in the morning of and you'll be fine. You don't need to take the first flight only to sit at SYD for 6 hours.

You also need to transfer from the domestic terminal to the international terminal.

Also risk of flight cancellation and delays.

        This doesn’t take 5 hours.

        • It will if no transit drivers turn up to work

  • From 3PM (day prior) Surfers Paradise Coach to Casino then
XPT to Sydney (Central) overnight Sleeper.
Leaves you the morning in Sydney to get to Syd Int Departures on your terms.

I did it once, mainly because it lined up with my schedule so thought what the heck might as well do it once and see what it's like.
        Never again.
