Making a Cushion out of Own Hair

Ever since the lockdowns I've been too chicken to go to a hair dresser. Been cutting my own hair ever since. I lay out a garbage bag to catch my hair and I've been saving it. I now have enough to stuff into a small cushion. I was cutting my hair last night and was toying with the idea.

Is it gross to make a cushion out of my own hair?

PS: It's a shame to waste it and it's quite soft and nice.

  • Personally I would prefer a cushion stuffed with eye lids

An "artistic" girlfriend of Frasier did a cushion like this.
Is it stuffed with…your own hair?
    It's mostly mine.

Seriously, aim for 50-50 hair/polyester otherwise it'll be a flat cushion in no time.

  • Awesome idea. Do it and let us know how it goes.

  • You could donate to a potter who does raku firings. It can be used to create effects on pots etc.

Afterwards make sure you chant "Klaatu barada nikto"

  • Sure it’s weird, but hey. We’re all weird in our own ways. Embrace it and let us know how it goes!

Made me laugh… I guess there is a market for Candles made from my earwax after all :p

To people finding this unappealing, do you find wearing wool as unappealing?
Because wool raw material most definitely smells and feels disgusting…. but once washed is obviously incredibly popular (and expensive).

Washed human hair, used as a filler inside another membrane should not be horrifying at all.
Even processed like wool and then used to sew items on its own shouldn't be an issue.

You're thinking about the raw material, not the end product.

  • If it's blonde or white and soft then it's ok

  • I think I might make a seat cushion from my ball hairs.

May have to open it to the Ozbargain forum if you're on the fence ;)

Could go either way, you never know.

  • I voted yes, as I want a followup.

  • This used to be a thing. American slave owners used to do exactly this with hair from their slaves a while ago.

  • Hey, for your next project you could try making a stress ball out of a balloon and the previous night's dinner.

  • Sometimes we see the goose (or duck) feathers coming out of the cushions. I can't imagine hair streaking out… 🤮

    No that's perfectly normal…
Should also make a duster out of your hair to dust the cushions too.

  • It's fine. People wear wigs and hair extensions made out of other people's hair, which I don't think I could do (no judgement if others do, I have a lot of hair still on my head and have actually been thinking about donating it), I'd prefer a fake hair wig should I ever need one. But if you're using a regular cushion cover without gaping holes (I.e. not a crocheted/knitted one) I don't see an issue. Feathers poke through because they have the hard bit, but hair wouldn't poke through a tight weave cushion cover.

but in all seriousness, go for it. there is no problem with hair, as long as it is well sealed.

be aware that some bugs like to eat hair, so it is worth researching and figuring out if there's a way to deter them; maybe an inner sealed liner, maybe a coating you can soak them in, maybe chucking some lavender and mint in there, or i dunno… science is a wonderful thing.

haters gonna hate. hair is as clean as anything else, we're just petty delicate creatures

  • I think it's OK, assuming the cushion is for yourself.

  • Id imagine it would be fine so long as there was a cover inbetween the hair and the outer cover that made sure no hairs poked through….

  • You are free try it and see how it turns out.

If you change your mind, there are charities that accept hair: https://kidswithcancer.org.au/donating-your-hair/
