PlayStation 2 Controller (Dance Mat) Only Working in Port 2, Any Ideas?

My daughters dance mat stopped working. It's the kind that has lights come on when you touch the pad. In port 1 it's dead. In port 2 it works?

BUT…

Port 1 still works with all other controllers. Also tried it on a completely different PS2 to rule out the machine port. Same thing.

I had a look at the pinouts online and can't see any difference between port 1 and port 2?

This one has me stumped?

  • seems weird - if it definitely is functional in port 2 and you cant find any other solution, perhaps you can look at a cheap ps2 -> usb adapter, and play stepmania on pc instead. Way better than ps2 ddr.

    • Cheers. But I tried using a Wii adapter. No go. Used another working mat to confirm it works on the wii (although the 'working mat' mat has a non functional down arrow), which it does.

So weird as both mats were working perfectly, then put away (not stored rough and nothing squashing them).

Next time, one is dead, and the other has no down arrow.

Sounds like bad contact (oxidation) at the mat connector pins. PS2 is eons old now so it would be worth cleaning the pins out a bit. Try spraying some contact cleaner on the pins of the mat connector, then plugging it in and out of port 1 to agitate the pins and clean them out. I'm tipping that should work!

Cheers, will give it a try. Just can't work out why it works on port 2 on multiple machines. The pinouts are supposedly the same. Perhaps a signal difference and the internal IC has gone. Weird.

    • No joy with the cleaner.

Pretty sure the chip on board integrated Circuit on the logic board is gone.

      Can't see anything wrong anywhere.

      • Does it still work on port 2?

        • I thought it was working in port 2 as the lights at the top come on whenever you press a button. When in port 1 it's completely dead, nothing. However, I tried it last night in port 2 as a second player, and although it was lighting up on each button press, nothing was being registered by the PS2.

  • I bet they have tunzafun with it too. Here’s hoping you can get it working.
