Motel not having appliances tested.

We recently stayed in a motel in country NSW. Seeing the test tags on the electric jug I checked it. Last tested 19/9/2015. fridge and Iron also on the same date. The motel has 70 rooms.Which government dept is the correct one to speak with?

Can you please post MS Paint diagram for better understanding?

Not sure I have ever seen test tags on appliances in motel rooms.

OP, if you genuinely think the room is unsafe you should immediately take pics of the tags, pack up, and check out. Do not sleep/stay in the room. Ask for a refund and explain why.
(They may have a tagged room available to you; unless you have checked all 70 rooms).

After the person at reception has stopped laughing find a safer hotel. Inspect the room of the new hotel (for tags) before checking in.

If there is no refund from the non-tagging hotel try to obtain a refund through legal means (use your pics as evidence).

  • Hi there hellopam/screensaver. Been waiting for one of your entertaining posts.

The ironic part about this thread, is that if it was titled "I got electrocuted by an appliance in a hotel" every single response would be "what was the date of the test and tag on the appliance" "Contact SafeWork" etc etc

    • Well, you'd get a follow up questions like…

What was the condition of the appliance?
Did you stick a fork in the toaster again?
Did you hop in the bath with a hairdryer again?

  • OP goes to peoples house, straight away checks if cables are test and tagged or not

    Op sounds like fun

    Not

It's been 13 years since I was involved in electrical equipment compliance but they relaxed a lot of the rules and made test/tag risk based (except for construction sites IIRC).

I'd suggest you look up " managing electrical risks in the workplace model code of practice " which will answer all your questions if you are genuinely concerned.

A lot of work places now just install RCDs on literally everything (including every socket and every light) instead so that they no longer need to test and tag.

    • +1

but RCD's also need to be inspected, and im pretty sure they don't remove the need for equipment test and tagging

Got a link to the standard that shows an RCD removes the need for down-stream devices to be test and tagged/inspected?

      • Here's a page that backs me up:

"The installation of RCDs in low-risk working environments (such as offices) may eliminate the requirements to test and tag portable appliances provided these RCDs are regularly tested."

        https://131tag.com.au/rcd-testing/sunshinecoast/brisbane

Although the company selling test and tag services recommends that you test and tag everything. I'm sure that's because they are worried for your safety though and their motivations definitely wouldn't be monetary in nature.

You are correct though, RCDs would still need to be tested and tagged.

  • Is this Pam's alternate account?.

I really don’t understand why OP is being fried like a chicken.

Motels are public place. And there are greater possibilities for any equipment to get damaged. Who knows someone stayed with pet which might had chewed/half chewed the wires. Many things can damage appliances.

While for the home equipments, we know a lot better as it’s our thing. And Non accessible to public.

There’s a reason why yearly inspection maybe in place.

Because 'test and tag' is an asinine requirement, the pinnacle of pointless red tape.

An electrician bills $80/hr minimum - to look at the cable and see if the toaster turns on. It would be far cheaper to throw away every appliance in the motel and buy new ones.

On most construction sites, the trades pull out the roll of stickers their mate gave them and write some dates on them with a sharpie.

Meanwhile we have OP clutching their pearls worried that a kettle that sits inside all day and is barely used is going to kill them in their sleep.

    • Motels are public place?

Testers and taggers in most cases don't actually check that it's safe.
They simply plug said item into the tester hit a button and tag.

A few years ago I was servicing a private schools electrical equipment when I noticed a big pile of freshly tagged ok soldering irons with burns on nearly every cable exposing both active and neutral wires.
Further inspection of other freshly tagged ok power tools also revealed similar results.
We nearly ran out of our big box of out of service tags.

Taggers tag all sorts of devices that don't require it they have to to earn enough to make the site visit worthwhile the amount they are paid means they don't really check important things like damaged cords etc as long as the testing box green lights it then it's good to go.

Now that we are so close to zero unemployment, the country needs to wind back these make-work schemes.

    • The first part of any test is (or should be) a visual inspection. Cables should not be put near a PATS machine if there is damage like you describe - Out of service (and in my opinion, a side-cutter deployed :-) ) straight away.

Sounds like you have seen some really dodgy guys at 'work'.

    • Yep, they tagged my colleagues phone chargers once, and then tagged a tool as safe which ended up electrocuting me the week after they'd been when it was next used.

A waste of time given how little they actually do

  • Obvious troll

  • Has speaking directly with the motel manager ever occurred to you, OP?

I hope you actually enjoyed your trip.

  • +1

I am sure to Op is a ball of fun to go on holiday with.

  • OP is retired and clearly very bored with himself.

  • Very telling of what's on offer in country NSW when looking at tags is seen as a pastime.

  • There was a safety incident at my work not long ago. Cheap power pack with US pins, bent to fit aus sockets. The front broke off and left exposed pins in the powerpoint… sure enough, had just recently been test & tagged. It's an absolute scam.

I once watched an electrician "tag and test" appliances. I got a good laugh seeing how one makes money for nothing.

  • +1

I'm a qualified electrician and now do electrical design - test and tag is total bullshit and essentially is just more red tape on business and is a money making scam for the companies and individuals who carry it out.

Don't stress about it - although you come across as someone who likes to stress. In that case, party on Garth.

  • +1

Wow i bet op is fun on holidays

  • Was this one of those by the minute motels…….surly you weren't too interested in making a cup of tea during your short stay?

  • I seriously didn't know "testing" appliances was a thing. Is it a thing?

  • Here I was wondering “what kind of person complains about nonsense” after reading the people on Twitter wanting a content warning on the new Thor movie because of a cancer scene, and now here’s another one of those types of people complaining about something else asinine. I guess there are more of them than I thought

  • The clock at my local library is often slow and the librarian opens up as much as 2 minutes late each morning.

Should I speak to the local council or is there a librarian association in my state who I should contact.

Note: I am not in WA if that helps.

  • Bring your own appliances like kettle, hairdryer, electric toothbrush, earplugs. Bring your own bedside lamp as well.

  • Place hasn't had any business for 2 plus years. Prob can't even afford to replace light globes. Give them a break champion.

  • is this a sign of society in decay?

  • +1

OP it doesn't matter mate no gives a fk tbh.

All a sparky does is look at the cord and that's it.

Test and tagging unless is done DAILY on a premises is totally pointless. Cords can get damaged at any time. Having a sticker won't stop a cord from getting damaged.

Just because there are silly rules made up by office people doesn't mean you need to go out of your way to go pick on a business.

Test and tagging a 70 room hotel would probably cost $7000.

You'll be complaining when the room is suddenly $5 more a night.

  • @BandB I'm curious what is the explanation of your peculiar interest and obsession with TandT (test and tag)?

Is it OCD or you have a test and tag fetish or you are just running a Bed And Breakfast in the same area and this is your spiteful way to harm the competition?

  • Call 000.

  • I suggest the greater worry when it comes to a motel kettle is whether previous guests have boiled their underwear in it. Yes, it’s a thing.
