How does this compare to the James Webb telescope? Is it worth spending the extra money over this?

    • Very light and portable I guess.

    • For a more fair comparison if you can take this telescope 1 million KMs away from earth you'll get a much better shot than on earth for the same telescope. James Webb Telescope is a different league but also 6 tonnes.

  • plenty of reviews on yt. short summary: it could be an interesting toy for stargazing….just dont expect much.

  • Will this allow me to see Uranus?

On a serious note though, I'm guessing something like this would be unusable in areas with a lot of light pollution?

    • The planets and moon are always bright even in light polluted cities. It's the deep sky objects (nebulae and galaxies) that will be very faint to see if you're not in a dark site.

I recommend doing a bit of research.

Here is one good place to start

      https://www.iceinspace.com.au/

Telescopes are similar to cameras in that there is your main instrument , and then there are the eyepieces.

Two main types of scope - Refractors ( think Captain Cook ) and Reflectors - which use mirrors to direct light to the eyepiece. ( There are other types that are more complex )

Generally the reflector type give more bang for buck. E.g. an 8 inch diameter dobsonian scope will cost about $800 .But basically you would only use this for stargazing.

The type advertised here can be both as a terrestrial scope and for astronomy.

Just a word of warning - DONT EVER EVER EVER look at the sun through a telescope - instant , and permanent blindness will result.

Bought it as I can throw this in my car and I can set this up quickly. I don’t expect to see everything in the sky. It’s only $100. Hopefully, I can see the moon in details when the sky is clear.

  • Thanks. Perfect entry level toy for my 4.5 yo.

  • Great for hiking and camping!? Who hikes with a telescope? A good pair of 7 x 50 binoculars will do you just as well for basic night gazing and more useful hiking.

  • A honest noob question..can we actually see planets as we see in tv through this? Like can I see brown mars or blueish Venus or at least Saturn rings?
