This is one for people with larger Synology NAS who do not want to pay for the official Synology ECC unbuffered RAM at extortionate prices. This will allow you to run more Docker Containers or VM's, and other internal software on the NAS to be more responsive (Synology Photos etc)

v-Color RAM has been confirmed as working without the warning message for non-official RAM: https://www.reddit.com/r/synology/comments/km1vzb/ds1821_and…

As these are 32GB SO-DIMMs, they may not work with all of the below devices but the compatible devices for the 16GB SO-DIMMs are:
FS series: FS1018
21 series: RS1221RP+, RS1221+, DS1821+, DS1621xs+, DS1621+, DVA3221
20 series: RS820RP+, RS820+
19 series: DS2419+, DS2419+II, DS1819+, DVA3219
18 series: DS3018xs, DS1618+
17 series: DS3617xs, DS3617xsII

The 2x16GB version of this kit is also available at 20% off ($231.00): https://www.amazon.com.au/V-Color-SO-DIMM-2666MHz-PC4-21300-…

  • Apart from price and form factor, how does the ECC RAM in this deal differ from this below?
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Timetec-2400MHz-PC4-19200-Unbuffer…

    • +1

This deal is specifically posted for those that need Synology compatible RAM with ECC which it is known for being compatible, along with some other embedded devices.

It's also 2666Mhz instead of 2400Mhz as you posted.

    • +1

This deal is for sodimm ecc ram. That is udimm. Different form factor.

  • Remember to check if your laptop support it before buy.

    • +2

Again, not posted for the benefits of laptop users (although some may certainly be compatible if CPU/chipset supports ECC).

It's very much for certain devices like NASes and other embedded devices which have issues with compatibility or software locks on certain memory like Synology has implemented. If you want laptop memory, you can probably go much cheaper and non-ECC in most cases.

The cheapest official 16GB Synology ECC SO-DIMM I can find it $541.91, and you can get the v-Color 2x16GB in the smaller kit for less than $250 which works without issue.

I'm just here to compliment you on your use of extortionate.

Respect to you my good sir..

  • Is 64GB recommended for a NAS or did you mean NASA??

    I have 16GB and it's overkill. I'm impressed by whoever needs 64.

The main use I could think of is virtual machines.

I have whatever my DS1621+ came with and it's fine, but if I were doing VM's maybe I'd get this.

      • VMs typically use about a GB each so…. 50+ of them would be pushing a NAS very very hard.

I'm not saying nobody would need this but I just haven't personally heard of anyone actually needing 64GB before. Would be interested to hear of some situations in which it notably improves performance.

        • You won't run any Windows VM on 1GB. Just far too slow especially with only spinning storage. You cannot use the SSD cache drives for VM storage directly.

Docker is far more lightweight but still needs memory. Some of the other apps on DSM can use additional RAM for performance too, and adding a 10GbE adapter uses the memory for speed as well.

      • Thanks. Please excuse my ignorance as I normally ignore NAS gear but why would you run VMs on a NAS? For remoting in from another PC? If you’re running Windows on the PC, why would you want another instance in a VM?

  • Will this be compatible with 10th gen Intel Razer blade?
