Cheap Canon EOS 60D- DSLR Camera (Body or Kit? What is better for a broke newbie?)

  • I'm looking for a good deal on 'Canon EOS 60D' (maybe Body only as I've heard that the lens you get in the kits are crap. Can anyone confirm or deny that…?

  • Is the lens quality that bad in kits that it would even matter for a budget-conscious newbie?
I can always upgrade later, right?

  • Any feedback on the Canon EOS 60D? (This is my first DSLR experience, but I want a camera I can grow with)

Cheers guys :)

1: I recently bought this from JB hifi direct import as they were competitive with online importers and you can return it to a real store if you have one near you.

2: The lenses aren't bad they just aren't fantasic. This is also subjective. I think the base lense that this comes with is fine, you will be paying a LOT more to get anything better, so see if/when you need something. Note: some online stores may bundle the camera with non-IS or other cheap lenses, so watch out for that.

3: The 60D is a strong camera (in my opinion), but you should probably also consider the 600D, which has any minor disadvantages and is smaller/lighter/cheaper. The optics are the same in both cameras.

There's very little difference between the 60D and 600D body if your a beginner/noob. The main differences between the two models are the 60D has slightly better build quality, user interface, buttons/wheels on the body, faster frame rate & slightly better auto-focus. They both take pictures & video at the same quality, and all the same lenses will attach.

Once you've been at photography for a while, you'll realise that a quality lens is more important & upgrade that down the line, not so much the body. You may as well save yourself $200 and get a 600D, then put that $200 towards your first good lens.

    • I thought auto-focus was entirely in the lense, can you tell me what the differences are here?

      • I'm no expert on these cameras, but from Canon's webpage the 60D has 9-point all cross type AF for ultra sharp images and the 600D only has 9-point AF for ultra sharp images. It appears the difference is that the 60D has 'cross type' AF.

  • I bought my 60D just on Saturday when Myer had a 20% off sale. Came up to $1278.20, about $100 cheaper than JB's online (Aust stock) price. This is the version that came with the twin lens kit. I decided not to get the JB direct import price, just in case I get hit with GST and it would have made little/no difference.

@ Bruce did customs charge you GST on the camera you bought?

    • Mine was just under $1000 (single lense), so there were no charges.

  • @earth2planetjen im in the same place as you at the moment. I think ill go the 60D body with the Tamron 18-270. I have felt both in store and with my large hands the 60D def feels a lot better than the 600D.
    Check out:
www.d-d-photographics.com.au have some cheaper prices and also a storefront if your worried about returns. ($878 grey import).
www.ryda.com.au has it for $918.85. Aussie stock, Genuine Australian Canon 12 Month Warranty and $177 bonus pack.

Cheaper (grey import) and a much larger chain with many storefronts.

      • Thanks Bruce. I just noticed that the d-d-photographics is actually AUD $817.00 but shipping is $45. The price above of $878 was with GST so travellors could claim money back if they wanted to.

  • Cheers for the info guys!
    Anyone here from perth?

  • I see the 60D body only Aussie stock is now $855 at JB Hifi.
