How to Find Market Value of Car for Ownership Transfer Purpose?

Hi,

Need to transfer a car within the family and I was wondering how do I go about finding the market value of a car. Is it just based on one of the car sales websites?

Go to the library and use an encyclopaedia

    • Had to use Bing to search for this google you speak of.

    • That became a thing after the Greens leader said "Google it" but I think we have moved on…

go redbook. find trade-in value. pick the price at the bottom of the range.
if car is in below average condition, minus up to 10%
Its a intra-family transfer so fairly undervaluing the transaction value is fine.

    • if car is in below average condition, minus up to 10%

They don't really know the condition of the car at transfer and how quickly the buyer might get it fixed. I'm sure lots of cars are sold to family for 80% discount, because of a few dings.

Yeah I know. You can get away with heaps, but I was giving a fair answer for the situation and many aren’t willing to risk it even though there is no deal downside.
Hell when I bought a car at 19 and registered in dads name for cheap insurance, and then later transferred back to me at 21 (because I wanted to be entirely responsible for it) I put down $1 and told the CSO what’s going on and she couldn’t care less and approved.

  • Just go down and do the transfer and put $0 or "gift" as the price and just let them tell you the market value.

    • That’s the one thing you don’t do. Putting $0 is rife of getting them to ask questions (I’m sure system would flag) and the first question they’ll ask is what’s the real market value (Carsales/redbook).
$1 is the true amount to put for a gift and then hope you get a friendly CSO on the day who sympathises with you and isn’t an arse

      • then hope you get a friendly CSO on the day who sympathises with you and isn’t an arse

Yeah, sure a particular CSO might let it slide, but that doesn't mean you're home free. I imagine they can still call you up about it later.

  • redbook. use the cheapest price for the cheapest model

  • Thanks all. Will use the valuation from Redbook.

  • put $300 and says its for wrecking
