Cause of This Car Paint Issue? Solutions to It?

Good afternoon OzBargainers,

What would have caused this paint issue on my 2012 Toyota?

It is above the front and back doors with no issues between for a little section. Doesn't seem to be anywhere else on the car.
Never garaged, always in the sun. (When the Sun is out)

What would be the solution for this?

Absolute novice re: these issues.

Thanks.

UV light coupled with weather and the car being used/parked outside.

The fix for it would be to get it professionally cut and polished.

    What would have caused this

    My guess is this:

Never garaged, always in the sun.

    • Yeah I know I answered my question after adding that in… 😂 but as I wrote to pegaxs above, just wasn't sure why it was no where else on the vehicle.

      • My guess to that is probably due to it being top most part of the car coupled with clear coat that’s on a slight angle which probably gets affected slightly faster than the clear coat on the roof that is on a fairly flat surface.

  • Appears to be the clear coat from exposure to the elements. A detail should be able to bring the paint back to life if not too far gone.

  • Never garaged, always in the sun.

    On a black car?!

Why would you do such a thing

      1. I have no Garage or Carport
      2. I would have purchased a different colour car if I could, but my dad sold it to me dirt cheap years ago.
      3. Sucks to be me now 🤣
      • It's gonna look pretty bad in the not too distant future…

        • Should I buy a car cover for those days it sits in the driveway if im not using it?

Obviously nothing I can do when im at work with it…but would that help do something?

    • My black car also lives outside, it loves it.

      • Does it tho? 😂

        • I think so 😂

  • you need to wax that mofo as much and as consistent as possible.

  • If it’s the same location on each side it’s probably an indication that the factory paint isn’t as good in that particular area. Possibly due to spray patten or something.

  • I'll bet thats facing the Western(afternoon) sun - which is particularly harsh.

Try the mildest cut and polish you can, go stronger one if several tries of this doesn't imrpove it. Start using a high quality sealant that gives UV protection - that might assist it from progressing onto other areas and is general good practice.

  • You should be using a quality wash and wax carwash, and applying a sealant (e.g. Turtle Wax Seal n Shine) every 3-6 months

the cheap and easy fix is to sand it , spray it with color matching paint and blend it in.

    • probably the best option as OP will save money + learn a valuable skill + probably end up with a better finish with priming and clear coating. No one else cares about your car as much you do.
