Energy Australia Sign up Confusion, Should I Cancel?

I went to Seniors Card NSW to see if there were any energy offers and there was, so I got a quote, it was 23 percent below ref price plus 50 sign up credit. They said the normal rates were 99 cents a day, plus 30 cents peak but with the guaranteed discount it was 77 cents per day and 23 cents peak. So I signed up, but the plan document they sent me only mentions the full rates, plus a slight reference to guaranteed discount, but no figures. this means if something goes wrong I have nothing to back me up. The call centre is closed, and in the past I have not been able to get them on the phone. Should I cancel this dodgy Plan?

Energy Australia is owned by the Chinese. Go with Origin or AGL

  • The call centre is closed
Should I cancel this dodgy Plan?

Don’t you have to wait until Monday anyways? Find out on Monday and report back.

in the past I have not been able to get them on the phone

    I’ve not had problems. YMMV.

    @forumregulars - I know, I know…

  • You'll generally have a 'cooling off period' of 14 days or so - and if it's not a 'lock in plan' can leave even after that.

I'd relax, leave it till you can get them on the phone (Monday?) and take the time it takes to get through and get everything stated clearly so you know exactly where you stand. Then reassess other options (which I assume you also did BEFORE signing up) and action.

    Will be fine.

Just bear in mind I'd imagine it's a non-fixed plan - so whatever the rates are now, they can change them after giving you notice - hence we've been recommending to folks to jump on Red Energy's Living Energy fixed plan, while it's still in place - rates fixed till AUG 2023.

  • this is supposedly fixed for 12 months

    • Are you sure about that? As the only actual fixed price plan EA had was their 'No Frills' plan, which has ended and people can't sign up for - those on it are apparently (as I'm not EA customer) getting moved onto other pricing.

Whats the name of your plan?

      • It's called Total Plan (Home), I think only available to seniors and existing customers.

      • I joined the 'no frills' plan last month and have recently gotten an email (after the plan was dropped) as a confirmation that despite the market volatility and pricing changes, my rates are locked in until 31 May 2023 (they backed my start date to 1 June 2022, even though I joined mid-month).

It's fixed rate plan for 12 months, my parents are on this plan. Don't worry, they will email you another document after plan acceptance, that will show the credit and plan discount rate. You also have 10 business days cooling off period.

    • This appears correct - seems it's a plan that you can't see on their main site - but by dodgying up on the NSW Seniors site it states it is a true fixed plan:

The energy charges for this plan won't increase for the 1 year fixed rate period. We'll let you know in advance before these rates change. Our rates are generally reviewed around July each year and we'll let you know when this happens.

EA's whole business model is VERy confusing - but I am sure you're getting what you signed up for, so I think you can relax.

      • It's definitely fixed rate, my parents renew this plan each year in June. Last year they got $50 credit and 27% discount. This year the plan discount rate got reduced to 22%.

I just checked my Origin new rates email and they are pretty good. 74 cents per day and 22 cents general usage. it is 24 percent below reference. Thats pretty good

looks like shopback and Econnex dont want people to see they didnt honour their last deal

    Oh Pam …

  • You are doing it wrong.

Go to the fed government website

    Energymadeeasy

put in your nmi number and will tell you based on previous usage your cheapest plans.

    • Or sanity check against sites like wattever if you have solar, as it calculates feed in offsets which the govt site does not.

      • Incorrect.

It asks you the import and export.

Try it yourself. Put heaps of export and you will have a negative bill.

Having done a huge price comparison a couple of months ago it definitely did not calculate correctly at that time

I compared monthly and yearly raw supplier exports for 3 years against the recommended plans that came to the top of both and the govt website was not calculating fit correctly.

If they have fixed it, that is good news.

@SBOB: Just did usage and export using both websites.

Over 316 days there was only $9 difference over that usage period

            1.7% difference.

Both websites confirmed the same cheapest plan

            Energy Australia Solar Max

  • If Energy Australia is like just about any other Australian call centre, their calls will all be recorded. If your bill ends up with the incorrect discount you can always request they pull the phone recording and provide it to you. I wouldn't worry too much about this.

  • I have received the contract and its the same. 99 cents a day and 30 cents peak. Then it says Guaranteed discount of 22^% applies to above rates. But that could mean the discount is already applied. II dont like this and think its ambiguous wording

    • Discount applies to rate…it's not ambiguous.

  • Energy Australia are being dodgy on their solar max plan.

It has a limit of 15kwh/r export. If you go over that you are not eligible for the plan.

It doesn't state this on wattever or energymadeeasy websites.

A lot of people will be fooled. I think this was a recent change to the plan and they didn't inform the gov.

    • It has a limit of 15kwh/r export

      its worse that that.
"your average solar export must be less than 15 kWh per day as recorded on your bill"

If it was 15kW/hr that would only exclude people with very large systems.
15kWh per day means even a 6kw system is likely to exceed this unless you ensure you utilise a fair chunk of usage over summer periods.

      • Yeah that's what I meant.

10kw system I average about 27kw feed in per day

  • I spent 2 hours on chat and finally got it in writing by email of the discounted rates. Origin called and are trying to get me back but I dont think they can beat this offer. They are calling back tomorrow
