Free Mobile VR Headset for Doing Online 30 Minute University Research Study @ Sydney University

710

Get a free VR Headset (3.3/5⭐ with 82 global reviews) worth $80 for doing a half hour online research study. It's available Australia wide as it's online - it's not limited to NSW only. The quality I expect to be a lot better then Google Cardboard.

It's by the university of Sydney student - Ethics Approval Protocol 2021/301

7. Are there any benefits?
All participants (recruited via Facebook, SONA Paid, or SONA Psych) will receive a VR headset via
post that will be theirs to keep if they complete the study. Those who do not attend the session
will be expected to return the headset in undamaged condition (postage provided).

UPDATE: I've double checked the facebook link and it's correct now - was too zealous on getting rid of the tracking elements.

  • It seems like they haven't updated the ethics approval serial number on the image but it's been an ongoing research study since 2020.

is this legit? looks like only 40 people likes this page… that usually flags it as scam to me

    • +3

Qualtrics.com (and subdomains) is a reputable survey company. I've never read of scammers abusing that domain for scams but there is always a first time I guess. There is no warning for a search on that domain - https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=sydneypsy…

If you click on the Facebook page that posted the ad it has six australian admins and was created over 2 years ago. Most scams the facebook page would be under 6 months old.

If you do a search on the whatsapp number listed on the linked FAcebook Page there is no scam warning pages on the internet.

      • Qualtrics belongs to SAP..

        • SAP is the majority shareholder but it's a separate company listed on NASDAQ.

          See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qualtrics

          • @brisdaz: so it's owned by SAP…

"Plans for the IPO were scrapped when it was announced in November 2018 that Qualtrics would be acquired by SAP (NYSE: SAP)."

            • @freedomofspeech: It probably still is owned by SAP as the references linked in wikipedia was dated 2022. There is a possibility that it was taken over by another company but I can't find any news reports of this.

    • +3

Pretty sure this is legit. I took the bait and clicked through their initial screening questionnaire and got to the research information statement https://sydneypsy.qualtrics.com/WRQualtricsSurveyEngine/File…

The supervisors are both well placed in USyd's website. The PhD student's name show up in USyd's 2021 graduation awards recipient list.

Also, the questionnaires that follow the initial screening is very in-depth and typical in measuring empathy and emotional responses.

  • Ok I am eligible and signed up for it. Last message I got is:

We thank you for your time spent taking this survey.
    Your response has been recorded.

Did anybody get anything after this?

    • +3

Not yet, but it's a university research study so I wouldn't expect a response for a few days to a week. It's not a commercial giveaway.

  • -2

I would stay away if they are asking for your name address and phone to send it can be a scam. They have the same posts in 2020 on Facebook for the survey

    • +3

Yes as I posted above the fact the page has stayed up for over two years means it's less likely to be a scam. If it was six months or less there's less time for authorities to shut it down.

Click on page transparency of Online VR Research Study - University of Sydney | Facebook to see it was created in June 2020.

  • Damn, the S22 Ultra is too big for the device.

  • +8

It’s a legit study I did it last year got my vr headset and did the study with no problems

  • -7

I don't see a research study as a deal. It's an item received for participation in a study. If this is a deal then every study where you get something back for your time, is a deal.

    • +2

If you look at the amazon link the VR glasses are worth $80 for half an hour of your time. It's a lot better quality then Google Cardboard.

      That's $160/hour.

I was thinking of putting it in competitions but decided to put it in deals. Do you think this is better in forums or competitions?

      • +4

there's no competitions in this matter.

We don't need to "take chance" to win the item.

        • Well I guess the competition element is being selected…..

But I guess that's the same with the cashback websites giveaway limited to first x (eg 1000) participants.

  • +4

That thing can Hardly be call a “VR headset” in 2022. Just a 3D glasses smart phone case. Which cant even fit a max size phone.

  • Rejected and no fcken idea why lol!

    • Check no when it says Have you experienced Virtual Reality before?

      • +1

I checked yes and still made it to the end

      • +6

I've experienced virtual insanity at a Jamiroquai concert.

  • +2

Thanks, made through the end where it asks for address to send the VR device and it says I'll be contacted by email

    • Did you attend the zoom meeting all that stuff it was asking?

      • What zoom meeting? I only just completed the survey. Not sure what happens next

        • They expect you to attend a zoom meeting with the vr headset at some time

          • +1

@FDA2021: Yup, but for now… Survey said I'll be contacted by email. You're too far ahead lol

          • @FDA2021: You can forget to attend meetings once you get headset

            • +4

@Ehty: … and as per their terms, you will have to return it to them undamaged if you do not. They pay for the postage.

              • @Freezies: Ok should have read the terms

                • @Ehty: @Ehty

If you don't want to do the research might want to email them to save postage and hassle.

If you decide to take part in the study and then change your mind you can withdraw by emailing
Mr Winston Tan at [email protected]. If you decide to withdraw during the study
session, you can inform the experimenter that you wish to withdraw. There will be no negative
consequences should you wish to withdraw.

If you choose to withdraw, we will not collect any more information from you. Please let us know
at the time you withdraw what you would like us to do with information we have collected about
                  you up to that point.

                  • +3

@brisdaz: I'm pretty sure they want to keep the headset without taking the study.

  • +11

calling a plastic box a VR headset and demanding $80 is ridiculous even in 2018

  • +4

What kind of sample do you get if there all from ozbargain?

You wouldn’t want to fail your phd because your research was ozbargained!

    • +2

I'm also worried that ozbargainer's will not do the half hour research and not return the headset….

    • omg they just got giga biased ozbargain bias now, study gonna have low p value = not pushing p, this is very non sigma

    • -8

How is that different from letting Facebook ad algorithm deciding who is a good survey participant?

In any case I've let the researcher's know I've put it up on ozbargain and to be careful.

      • +1

        don't do that

else they might not take participants that are enrolled this month
which means people wasted their time for nothing..

also I doubt it will cause some biased result just cos it came from ozbargain
since there is a variety of people who go to this site.

        • Depends on your target population. If your target population are all the tightarses in Australia, potentially predominantly male, and looking for a bargain then your good to go.

        • +2

people wasted their time for nothing

As opposed to the researchers, who are also people

      • -1

        U suck

  • enrolled. thanks

  • +1

    Survey closed …..

  • Did anyone receive any confirmation/response email ?

    • if anyone does, please post the email address of the sender so we can search for it
incase it gets in the spam folder

      • +3

I received an hour ago a Calendly invite from [email protected] with subject: "Sign up: How Does Online Learning in Virtual Reality Affect Memory?" for interview next week .

        Please report back any success.

  • Sorry, this survey is not currently active.

  • +2

I don't understand what happened here. Did OP simultaneously post a deal and then ruin it for everyone?

Is this the first-recorded instance of a 'reverse-Broden'?

    • -1

What do you mean by reverse broden?

Why do you assume that it was me? Is it possible that with 2000 clicks that the researcher's got enough participants and closed the study off?

      • +1

But you emailed them and gave a heads up on the post. That would be like someone emailing Good Guys Commercial to tell them a bunch of people found a backdoor to the service!

        • -1

          That analogy is incorrect.

There is nothing devious about my post - they want participants but maybe not so much. Doing the qualification survey was never a guarantee that you would get picked for the study and get the VR headset. In fact by alerting them it may guarantee those quick to react are more likely to be picked as there is less pool of candidates.

    • Reverse-Broden?
What you’re talking about is when a deal gets ozbargained and it happens all the time

    • What do you mean by ruin for everyone?

    • +1

Incorrect tbh the researcher is looking for participants as long as OP didn't tell people how to answer the survey or tell individual the contents of the study he isn't ruining anything

  • +1

Didn’t receive any follow up email for me.

    • +1

      Neither

      • Thanks for the feedback.

When did you guys complete the survey and how long after 17/07/2022 - 21:19 when I posted it?

      • Same

  • -2

I just finished the VR interview. It took half an hour as promised.

    • +1

      Same here. All good.

  • So this went ahead? Damn never got one.

  • +5

    Hi,

You are receiving this email because you signed up to a psychology study exploring VR and memory on July 17th, 2022.

On this day, a link to the Facebook advertisement for our study was posted on OzBargain by an individual not associated with our research. This breached our ethics protocol, meaning that we are not able to test those individuals who signed up during this period. We do understand that a very small percentage of individuals who signed up via. ethically approved means may have also clicked the advert link during this period. However, as we are unable to determine who these individuals are, they are also ineligible to participate and unable to receive a headset.

We greatly appreciate your interest in our research and sincerely apologise for this inconvenience which was beyond our control. We have ensured that the data you provided when registering your interest in the study has been removed from our records.

Many thanks for all your patience while we dealt with this situation.

    Kind regards,
    Psychology VR Team

    • Yeah , also got this!
