Attaching a Net to a Public Basketball Hoop

Thinking about purchasing attaching a net to the local basketball hoop, was wondering if anyone has done the same?
Is it possible to get in trouble for doing so?
Am quite sick of there not being a net and have used it every day or so since i moved to the area.
Was thinking to get a chain net and then cable ties as well to prevent anyone stealing it.

      It's a Sports & Outdoors forum. What's the problem?

Also if you check below, someone offered a great solution.

  • Council may remove the net if there is a perceived public risk/liability. i.e. users getting fingers caught trying to slam dunk or hang from the ring.

Chain net would be more attractive to thieves, just put a cheapo one up if you're keen. No one cares, just do it.

Use a few padlocks if you want to ensure theft prevention

      FTFY.

OP probs need 2FA to be on the safe side

IMO the reason there's never nets on public hoops is because people will rip them down which risks damaging the hoop. You won't get in trouble for installing one but don't expect it to last more than a week.

Idiots are why we can't have nice things.

There is only one question: Why would you want to?

    • OP covered that already

Am quite sick of there not being a net and have used it every day or so since i moved to the area.

For personal use. I know its 'rare' but you can do things that improve your life even in a public space.

That doesn't answer what the benefit of having a net is

That doesn't answer what the benefit of having a net is

The question was "Why would you want to?" and yes that was 100% answered in that quote.

The OP said they are sick of not being a net on the hopp that they use every day or so since moving into the area.

The OP wants one, there isn't one there. Hence that is the benefit to them. Might not be to you, but is to them.

@JimmyF: I don't think "because he wants to" is a very informative answer to the question "why does he want to".

              @Quantumcat:

I don't think "because he wants to" is a very informative answer to the question "why does he want to".

It is clear from your later comments you really wanted an answer to a different question than what was being asked, which was what does a net do….

OP's basket ball partner is claiming swish and he wants a net to prove they are just air balls

    • +15

So the ball bounces downwards after it goes in…. or when you do a 'swish' the ball doesn't end up 10m behind the ring.

      • Thank you for an actual answer. I was imagining maybe so the ball falls more slowly out of the ring but your answer makes more sense.

    • It's just nicer, gives a better depth perception as well. It feels weird shooting with no net

  • Thinking about purchasing attaching a net to the local basketball hoop, was wondering if anyone has done the same?

    I'm sure someone has.

Is it possible to get in trouble for doing so?

Doubt it, you are not damaging the hoop etc. If the council/owner doesn't like the net they can remove it and put up a sign saying 'no nets'

Am quite sick of there not being a net and have used it every day or so since i moved to the area.

Then do it! You'll get lots of use out of it. Heck kmart sells the worlds cheapest net for $4, so not really risking much

    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/basketball-net-42133711

Or fleebay has chain ones for $20

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/393402628927

Was thinking to get a chain net and then cable ties as well to prevent anyone stealing it.

I would start with something 'cheap' like the kmart one just incase it gets removed/damaged/broken/not allowed. Well the $4 kmart one will die like instantly but will give you a idea if its allowed.

At a wild guess the hoop most likely had a net at one point, but got damaged. So be prepared for this to happen.

But long term a chain one would be best, but if someone wants to steal it, cable ties will only slow them down.

So always think of this act as a donation, not as something you 'own'.

  • In the past I have had this same dilemma.

I loved basketball and I loved playing at my favourite public school court.

    HEre are my experiences.

Note : Nobody cares that you are putting a net up.

    a) Put up normal 'cloth' basket. It doesn't last long. Every so often some knob thinks its a good idea to hang off the cloth basket and it is torn over weeks.

    b) Get a chain one like the ones you see in American schools and public courts. Too expensive and if you leave it there I suspect someone will take it.

  • I've seen guys bring a ladder to install a net.

I didn't see it again when I went back.. so not sure if the same players took it back home or the council removed it.

As above get a cheapie so no harm if it is removed.

But I understand.. it's annoying playing without a net, especially if you're by yourself. You get punished for shooting a swish.

  • Just did a bit of research, really bugger all incidents of nets causing injuries. Very rare.

What was surprising though is the amount of deaths there's been from muppets swinging on basketball rings and the whole backboard and all coming down and killing them. One of the dumbest ways to die contenders.

Op I can't find the link right now but there is a portable tempory net.
It's like a rubber ring with a net that you shoot on to the ring, then when you're done throw the ball back from underneath to get it back off.

  • From experience, if you're going to install a net, take it down when you finish the game.

I know it's a bit of a pain, but the extra couple of minutes is worth it. Otherwise it'll likely be wrecked rather than stolen. People will hang off it etc. and probably damage the ring in the process.

    • How does one install/remove the net each time? Carry a step ladder around with them each time?

  • +3

I have done this. Spent a few years in Wellington NSW for work, there was a public court in the town. I not only put up a net I also straightened and fixed the ring, cleaned up all the broken glass, and pulled the weeds growing in the cracks. The result was not only a place to shoot around, after a while others started to show up and we had regular pick-up games.

There was some occasional damage from idiots trying to hang on it and I completely replaced it once in the 3 years I was there, but overall it copped less abuse than I thought it would get the day I put it up.

Do it. If you like basketball you already know the satisfaction of the sound the ball makes when it strikes the net on a perfect shot.

  • Just do it!! Really can't see why it needs so much discussion LOL!!
