Carpet Cleaning Options

Hi all,

We currently rent in an oldish apartment with carpet floors.

Partner and I have been here 3+ years and we've never done a carpet clean during our stay. It's our first rental with carpet so all we know is the mandatory carpet clean at the end of our contract period.

Obviously the carpet will be very dirtly by now (oddly that the carpet doesn't really 'show' its lack of clean..?) so we want to get it cleaned while we continue to live here.

Question is, how do we go about doing this ourselves without moving all the furniture out? What tools do you recommend to this and how much time should we brace ourselves for (including any time to dry the areas)

Thanks in advance.

  • Bissell pro heat or equivaent off gumtree.

a few hours of elbow grease for the stains

    sell bissell next weekend.

You can rent a Britex for ~$100 for 24 hours from Woolies, Coles, Bunnings etc. A good carpet cleaner should suck up most of the water, so drying time shouldn't be more than a day, if you can I would hold off until a hot day/summer so it dries quicker, otherwise it will take much longer and you'll need fans etc.

    • Agree with hot day and get all of your fan(s) and turn them on to blow at the carpet in the one direction of air flow so the air flows in one opening (say the balcony door) and out another opening (say a bedroom window).

If you want mould or smelly carpets then do it when the carpet takes a day or two to dry.

    • Significantly cheaper at bunnings then

      24hrs was $38 last time I checked, and 48hrs was ~$46

      • I think same price every where…that's just machine hire cost. If you add the upholstery wand and cleaning chemicals/bottles it is closer to $100 from memory.

Just get someone to come in and do it, they move everything while your out sitting in the sun.

    • Actually agree with this. Having rented equipment from Bunnings twice to do it myself and then later getting it done by a professional, it's a massive cleaning quality difference. Just get someone to do it for you. Most cleaning service companies have a carpet steam clean add-on.

      • Okay, that makes sense. Do you think its a large difference between DIY and professional service? As a measurement, our place is 2 bed with a fairly large living room (around 90 sqm in total)*

*fairly large is very subjective and based on our experience with Syd apartments.

        • 2 bed carpet steam clean on Whizz is $120. Issue is it's an add-on to a home clean. There's bound to be others that can do carpet clean only service.

A professional will cost a probably twice as much (or more) as DIY, but they should do a much better job in less time because of their experience and equipment. Also you don't spend a whole day or two doing it yourself, so it just depends how you value time vs money.

Eg I had to spend ~$300 or so for an end of lease clean for a 1 bedroom many years ago. This however was the whole unit, not just steam clean of carpets.

  • Just wait until you leave.
